Hello Cutting Edge Gardeners!

Lots and lots of new plants are now coming available from our production side, many of them brand new this year, others cool ongoing favourites. Here are a few of the Hot Plants that have just come available at the nursery.

If you haven't been to the nursery in the last couple weeks it will look totally different from your last visit!

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Agastache 'Apricot Nectar' - Hyssop - Apricot Nectar has dense spikes of golden blossoms. The Nectar Series are compact plants growing from 15 to 18 inches tall and 15 inches wide. They are great for all summer and fall colour at the front of the border and are also compact enough for patio pots. Agastache are popular with hummingbirds. They have fragrant foliage. Agastache 'Grape Nectar' - Hyssop - Grape Nectar has dense spikes of luscious grape pink-purple blossoms. The Nectar Series are compact plants growing from 15 to 18 inches tall and 15 inches wide. They are great for all summer and fall colour at the front of the border and are also compact enough for patio pots. Agastache are popular with hummingbirds. They have fragrant foliage.
Agastache 'Orange Nectar' - Hyssop - Orange Nectar has dense spikes of deep orange flowers. The shade of orange is unusual and bold. The Nectar Series are compact plants growing from 15 to 18 inches tall and 15 inches wide. They are great for all summer and fall colour at the front of the border and are also compact enough for patio pots. Agastache are popular with hummingbirds. They have fragrant foliage. Agastache 'Grapefruit Nectar' - Hyssop - This amazing hosta emerges with leaves ghostly white creating a striking spring display. As the leaves mature they warm a little into creamy yellow and then develop streaks of green amongst the white for a continuation of the unique foliage show. By summer the leaves go completely green. The show starts again the next spring! Lavender flowers.
Agastache 'Raspberry Nectar' - Hyssop - Raspberry Nectar has dense spikes of raspberry red flowers. The Nectar Series are compact plants growing from 15 to 18 inches tall and 15 inches wide. They are great for all summer and fall colour at the front of the border and are also compact enough for patio pots. Agastache are popular with hummingbirds. They have fragrant foliage. Agastache 'Blue Boa' - Hyssop - Luxurious, deep, violet blue flower spikes held over ultra green foliage. The flower spikes are long, wide and extremely showy. Great for summer colour. Compared to 'Blue Fortune', 'Blue Boa' has deeper violet blue flowers and wider flower spikes. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. The licorice-scented foliage is edible and good in salads. Excellent planted en masse in the perennial border or in the herb garden. Drought tolerant once established. Blooms from summer until frost.
Eryngium yuccifolium - Rattlesnake Master - Much admired in our old succulent bed, this species from the eastern US has greyish green, yucca-like foliage (hence the species name) and slender three foot stems holding egg-shaped clusters of white flowers. This peculiar genus from the carrot family is found around the world but with its centre of diversity in South America. There are also a number of European species. Lobelia syphilitica - Great Blue Lobelia - Once used to treat syphilis now it is used to grace gardens. The beautiful blue spikes of great blue lobelia do remarkably well without staking in sun to part shade. The blue is stunning against its pale green leaves and is useful to create a delphinium-like effect in shadier parts of the garden. Enjoys a moist soil but will do well in average sites as well.
Penstemon 'Riding Hood Delft Blue' - Beardtongue - Tubular deep blue flowers with purple infusions on slender stems bloom for most of the summer. A good cut flower. Beautiful foliage. Penstemon 'Red Riding Hood' - Beardtongue - Dramatic spikes of lipstick red, tubular flowers that bloom for most of the summer. A good cut flower and a hummingbird favourite. Beautiful foliage.
Agave 'Kissho Kan' - Century Plant - This fantastic agave is a Japanese selection featuring blue-gray leaves with beautiful creamy-white edges. The terminal spines emerge a light brown color, changing to burgundy-brown with maturity. 'Kissho Kan' translates to "happy or lucky crown". Grows to only one foot tall by one foot wide so excellent as a container specimen and winter houseplant. Geranium 'Chery's Shadow' - Cranesbill - 'Cheryl's Shadow' has incredible lush maroon foliage held on matching stems all in a politely compact mound. In spring small light pink flowers are produced that contrast surprisingly with the dark display of leaves. Place it in the foreground of the perennial garden for attractive, distinct foliage, even when not in flower or use it in containers.
Anemone 'Pretty Lady Diana' - Japanese Anemone - The Pretty Lady series of anemone feature compact habits growing to only 15 inches tall. 'Diana' has single pink flowers over two inches (five cm) wide. Use at the front of the border or in containers. These long-lived garden plants are great for mixing with other fall-blooming perennials. Prefers average to evenly moist soils and will not tolerate long periods of dryness. Scabiosa columbaria 'Mariposa Blue' - Pincushion Flower - Fully double, large, lavender blue blossoms on sturdy stems rise above tidy bluish-green foliage. With a compact, tidy habit, this is a long and profuse bloomer. The Phoenicians were mightily impressed with this cultivar in our trials.
Coreopsis 'Desert Coral' - Tickseed - Large flowers with peachy-orange and coral red colours. Flowers are produced in profusion all summer long. A great, low compact habit. All coreopsis require excellent drainage. Coreopsis 'Pink Sapphire' - Large rich pink flowers with an icy white ring around the centre. Flowers are produced in profusion all summer long. A great, low compact habit. All coreopsis require excellent drainage.
Coreopsis 'Ruby Frost - Tickseed - Large, deep ruby flowers are fringed with a collar of frosty white and produced in profusion all summer long. Truly a colour breakthrough in the world of Coreopsis. A great, low compact habit. All coreopsis require excellent drainage. Heuchera 'Delta Dawn' -- 'Delta Dawn' has magnificent, large, round leaves with red centers in the spring and fall; in summer its red veins run like rivers to the sea against a gorgeous gold to lime main leaf colour highlights the venation. Strong, vigorous habit. Perfect for a shade container or to add color to a dark area. Delivers the "look" that Heuchera 'Miracle' promised.
Romneya coulteri - California Tree Poppy - These upright blue-green foliaged poppies are deciduous subshrubs that prefer a hot, sunny space in well-drained, crummy soil. For this you will be rewarded with an almost continuous display of large, pure white, crinkled petals with prominent raised yellow stamens that appear on the ends of each stem and look like fried eggs sunny side up! Sometimes hard to establish and resents being moved - so choose the spot well! Cut back to the base in winter and mulch, if exposed. Anigozanthos 'Cape Magenta' - Kangaroo Paw -- Kangaroo paws have some of the most distinctive flowers in the botanical world with clusters of fuzzy tubular flowers that look like a kangaroo's paw and that bloom for months! 'Cape Magenta' has mid to deep pink flowers on stems to two feet tall above iris-like mid-green foliage. Tolerant of some freezing but safest to bring plants inside to a greenhouse or as a houseplant in winter.
