15 Hot Plants for Summer Container Colour

Geranium 'Rise and Shine' - Cranesbill - 'Rise and Shine' blooms for months from June until frost with masses of rich blue flowers centred with a white eye surrounded by a pink halo. Add the accent of dark veins and black stamens and you have one a spectacular flower show. Flowers lighten towards pink with age creating a multi-coloured display. If you love 'Rozanne', you'll love 'Rise and Shine'. Salvia microphylla 'Hot Lips' - Baby Sage - Very cool and an all time Phoenix Perennials bestseller. This is a fast-growing wild selection of a Mexican sage which is adorned with stunning bicolour flowers -- white flowers with red lips -- from May until frost. But the expression of colour is temperature sensitive. In spring the flowers are usually all red, later bicoloured/hot lipped and in the heat of the summer all white, then returning to bicoloured and then red again in the fall. Will produce thousands of flowers in a season. Well-drained soil in full sun. Hard prune each spring. Even worth it as an annual in colder climates.
Echibeckia 'Summerina Brown' - Echibeckia - Echibeckia is a unique cross between two classic perennials: Echinacea and Rudbeckia. The Summerina hybrids are fast-growing and disease resistant. The flowers are large at over three inches in diametre. Plants bloom for 2-3 months or more. Echibeckia 'Summerina Orange' - Echibeckia - Echibeckia is a unique cross between two classic perennials: Echinacea and Rudbeckia. The Summerina hybrids are fast-growing and disease resistant. The flowers are large at over three inches in diametre. Plants bloom for 2-3 months or more. 'Summerina Orange' has striking orange, yellow and rust-coloured flowers with dark centres.
Scabiosa 'Mariposa Blue' - Coneflower - Fully double, large, lavender blue blossoms on sturdy stems rise above tidy bluish-green foliage. With a compact, tidy habit, this is a long and profuse bloomer. The Phoenicians were mightily impressed with this cultivar in our trials. Use it in containers or at the front of the border. Antirrhinum 'Snap Daddy Yellow' - Coneflower - Go retro chic with this variegated snapdragon! This hardy cultivar can handle zone 7. The lemon-yellow blooms have light yellow highlights and are held in fat spikes above green and white, variegated foliage. The plants are bushy and compact and happy to flower over a long period from summer until frost!
Phygelius Croftway 'Pink Princess' - Cape Fuchsia - Phygelius are vigorous, long-blooming, evergreen South African sub-shrubs. The Croftway Series offers a longer bloom time than other cape fuchsia, lasting from spring into fall. Freely blooming, denser flowers and a more compact habit with rich dark green foliage. Best in full sun with well-drained soil. ‘Coral Princess’ has salmon-pink flowers. Antirrhinum 'Snap Daddy Pink' - Coneflower - Go retro chic with this variegated snapdragon! This hardy cultivar can handle zone 7. The pink blooms are held in fat spikes above green and white, variegated foliage. The plants are bushy and compact and happy to flower over a long period from summer until frost!

Phygelius Croftway 'Purple Prince' - Cape Fuchsia - Phygelius are vigorous, long-blooming, evergreen South African sub-shrubs. The new Croftway Series offers a longer bloom time than other phygelius, lasting from spring into fall. Freely blooming, denser flowers and a more compact habit with rich dark green foliage. Best in full sun with well-drained soil. ‘Purple Prince’ has deep vibrant violet blooms.

Coreopsis Li'l Bang 'Daybreak' - Tickseed - Single red flowers with a vibrant golden yellow edge on dark green foliage. Blooms all summer long. Great at the front of the border or in containers.
Heuchera 'Red Lightning' - Coral Bells - 'Red Lightning' has huge lime yellow to golden yellow leaves with striking red veins. The leaves are larger with bolder red markings than 'Delta Dawn'. You won't miss 'Red Lightning' in the garden. Use it where you need to grab some attention, especially in containers. Heuchera 'Forever Purple' - Coral Bells - Heuchera 'Forever Purple' is an ultra-purple extravaganza with warm purple leaves and dark purple veins. Each leaf has a glossy finish and fluted edges. The flowers are purple-pink on short stems.
Dahlia 'Twyning's Smartie' - Dahlia - 'Twyning's Smartie' dahlia is a vigorous cultivar forming uniform clumps 16-18" high and just as wide. The single flowers have petals in two colours: some are rich reddish-purple, others are pure white. All are centred around striking golden-orange centres. A dramatically different dahlia that will make your garden friends green with envy. Dahlia 'City of Leiden' - Dahlia - 'City of Leiden' has dark bronze foliage and magenta-coloured flowers. A double duty dahlia with great foliage and flower.
Dahlia 'Bishop of Canterbury' - Dahlia - This cultivar has flowers that appear red or magenta depending on the angle of the light. The flowers are single and sit atop rich, burgundy foliage. Blooms from early summer until fall and grows from two to three feet tall. Excellent in containers or in the garden. Three options for winter starting with easiest and safest: 1. grow in a pot and move to a frost-free area, 2. lift tubers and store, 3. leave in the ground in well-drained, sunny beds under a mound of fallen leaves.
