Toadlilies for Fall Colour
A Shade Garden is Never Complete without the Exquisite Beauty of Tricyrtis

Hardly is there a flower in the botanical world with such exquisite structure, detailing and colouration as the toad lilies. Though the flowers are only about one inch across, they rival orchids for sheer beauty. Plus they are fully hardy in most Canadian gardens AND they grow in the shade AND they bloom in late summer and fall when few other shade perennials are offering colour. This is a group of plants that shade gardeners need to pay attention to.

Toad lilies or Tricyrtis are native to Asia where they grow in shady forests. There are many species and numerous selections and hybrids for gardeners to choose from. At Phoenix Perennials we have between 20-30 different kinds that we offer, though not every cultivar is offered every year.

Toad lilies usually grow between one and two feet tall with arching stems clad in clasping leaves often with a little spotting or mottling. The flowers are produced in clusters along the stems. Though they are small, they are produced in great numbers on established plants and can bloom for months in the late summer and fall garden. During mild autumns I have had toad lilies still blooming in my garden in mid November.

Toad lilies are easy to grow in shade, part shade, or morning sun. They prefer average to rich evenly moist soils. They are generally carefree with no common pest problems. All in all they are a pretty smashing group of shade perennials well worth planting in every shade garden including yours!
