Hello Shady Characters!

If you have a shady garden and if you love fragrance you probably have been stymied many a time trying to get beautiful smelly things into your lower light spaces. That's because, if you think about it, there aren't a lot of fragrant plants for the shade garden. Why that is I don't know but fragrant hosta are here to save the day.

There are numerous cultivars available that will add sweet fragrance to your shade garden. Many of these are cultivars or hybrids with Hosta plantaginea. Thank goodness for this species.

Below you'll find a selection of fragrant hosta that we currently have in stock. I'm sure you have room for at least one in your garden! You'll be very happy once the blooms begin to open!

Have a look and enjoy!

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Fragrant Hosta
Add a fourth dimension to your shady garden with fragrance!

Hosta plantaginea 'Venus' - Plantain Lily - Light green, glossy, beautifully ribbed leaves and spectacular, large, extremely fragrant white flowers in summer. ‘Venus’ has the added bonus of double flowers -- actually they’re tripled with three flowers in one! The foliage of plantagineas is thinner than many other hostas. Plant in shade away from heat and drying winds. Hosta 'Avocado' - Plantain Lily - 'Avocado' is a sport of 'Guacamole'. It has the same dramatic large chartreuse leaves of 'Guacamole' but wider dark green edges. The white to pale lavender flowers are fragrant. Leaf colouration intensifies with more light and age.
Hosta plantaginea 'Diana Remembered' - Plantain Lily - Whereas most of species plantaginea aren’t variegated this special cultivar named after the late Princess Diana is. Hosta ‘Diana Remembered’ has medium-sized blue green leaves with creamy white margins. It offers good sun and heat tolerance compared with other plantagineas. The white flowers are elegant, large, and extremely fragrant. Hosta 'Guacamole' - Plantain Lily - The dramatic large chartreuse leaves have irregular dark green edges and deep veins. The white to pale lavender flowers are fragrant. Together these characteristics lead ‘Guacamole’ to be Hosta of the Year for 2002. Leaf colouration intensifies with more light and age. A sport of ‘Fragrant Bouquet’. Photo courtesy of Walters Gardens.
Hosta 'Sugar and Spice' - Plantain Lily - This sun tolerant and fragrant hosta has the shine of a plastic plant, medium green with a bright cream to white margin which is very exciting to the eye. It has good substance and makes an attractive somewhat upright clump. It also sports very fragrant lavender flowers in August. Hosta 'Irish Luck' - Plantain Lily - For those of you not keen on variegation here is a hosta designed for you. 'Irish Luck' is a vigourous grower with incredibly glossy, dark green leaves with pie crust rippled margins, deep veining and good substance. Due to the H. plantaginea parentage, 'Irish Luck' exhibits some sun tolerance and produces sweetly fragrant, light lavender flowers. Who needs variegation?

We also have 'Fragrant Bouquet' and 'Frozen Margarita'!
