The Phoenix Perennials E-Newsletter
August 2011

Hello from Phoenix Perennials!

What many people have been calling a "bummer summer" has been anything but for gardens. Though I think bloom times are still a bit behind the usual, most garden plants have loved this spring and summer with nice even temperatures and ample moisture.

This summer has also remained great for continued gardening. And many of you have taken advantage to keep gardening right through July and into August. What you didn't really want to do in the spring because it was so cold, you can do now this summer. The lack of summer heat and drought means you can be perfectly successful planting new perennials and shrubs with just a little attention paid to watering should we get a little heat (which I hope we do!)

In this issue we bring you a special Summer Surprise! offer. Buy 1 plant and get the second free. Limit of one free plant per person per day. Make sure you mention "Summer Surprise" at the cash register as this offer is being extended only through our e-newsletter. Details are below.

September is fast approaching and with it our fall workshops, spring bulb season and our Heirloom Tomato Festival. Remember that you need to book your tomatoes and your tasting sessions ahead of time so we know how many tomatoes to have on hand and how many people to expect!

Other than that we hope you are having a great summer.

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

3. Book More Tomatoes at the Festival for Pick-Up Sat and Sun Sept 17th and 18th
At the Festival you will be able to book more "Party Mix" quarts for delivery the following weekend. You will also be able to order quarts of specific types of heirloom tomatoes. The list of available cultivars will be provided at the Festival and will include the tomatoes that are fresh and perfectly ripe at the time.

*Please note that the pricing of these tomatoes is about the same as the cost for heirloom tomatoes at local farmers' markets. The quarts may contain a few fun peppers.

The tomatoes are grown by the farm of Red Barn Plants in Cawston, BC. Red Barn is the source of most of the tomato plants that we sell in the spring. Though Red Barn has not applied for organic certification all of their vegetables are grown with fully organic methods and all inputs are OMRI certified. So they are basically organic in everything but the gold seal.
