Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Phoenix Perennials!

It is the quiet time of the year at Phoenix Perennials now that we are closed for the winter season. But things are still going on behind the scenes. I'm chained to the computer ordering, planning and strategizing for next year and Larry is at the nursery building new display tables for the nursery. The rest of the Phoenicians are resting -- gone into dormancy -- until they pop up in the spring to help create what we hope is one of the best nursery experiences around! In the case of 2013 it will be our 10th Anniversary Season! Can you believe we have been around that long?

Though we are closed for the winter we did re-open for one weekend at the start of the month to lift your spirits with some Christmas cheer. Our second annual CHRISTMAS HURRAH! was a great success with three fantastic workshops and a great DIY project. See below for an article and photos about this event.

If you need some help with your Christmas shopping may we suggest Phoenix Perennials Gift Certificates. You can order online using our secure server. Orders placed by December 19th will arrive before Christmas according to Canada Post. You can also have a look at Gary's Favourite Books and order online from our little amazon.ca store. Every purchase made through this store, whether it be books or electronics, benefits the nursery.

If you're looking for a tangible gift other than a gift certificate or a book why not pay a visit to Bob Tuckey at the Natural Gardener Garden Store on West 10th in Vancouver? Bob is a friend of our nursery and his store is packed with wonderful gift ideas during the holiday season (and all year long!). In fact, my mother's Christmas present came from Bob's store a few years back. You'll get far more unique and interesting gifts from small businesses like the Natural Gardener than you will all those big boxes. Say Hi to Bob for us when you visit!

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

P.S. Mark your calendars for our Hellebore Hurrah! Opening Weekend March 1st to 3rd, 2013!

P.P.S. I was just in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Hong Kong in November. I've uploaded images on our Facebook page of Bangkok so far. Click here to see them. Join our Facebook page and watch for more updates coming soon of stunning places such as Ha Long Bay, Angkor Wat and the Mekong River Delta.

SECOND ANNUAL
The Christmas Hurrah!

Celebrating the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and the Helleborus Gold Collection with fantastic hellebores, special holiday-themed workshops and a DIY project not to mention lots of holiday cheer!

Thank you to everyone who came to the Christmas Hurrah! at the start of the month. A great time was had by all celebrating the holiday season as well as the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, with great plants, three different workshops and a fun do-it-yourself project!

This was our second year celebrating this new tradition at Phoenix Perennials on the first weekend of December. We had so much fun, it's definitely here to stay. The event is essentially a spin off of our now famous season opening event the Hellebore Hurrah! In this case we also celebrate hellebores but more specifically the winter blooming Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, which is often past its peak at the Hellebore Hurrah! With the advent of the incredible new cultivars from the Gold Collection including 'Jacob', 'Josef Lemper', and 'Jonas' which all start blooming in our climate in November and December the time seemed right for an event to celebrate them.

The Gold Collection was bred in Germany and with the trans-Atlantic voyage of their hellebores also arrived an awareness of the northern European tradition of bringing the Christmas rose into the house at Christmas time to contribute to the indoor festive decor, much as we would with poinsettias or Christmas cactus.

An Indoor Christmas Rose container that can be brought into the house for festive decoration.
These hellebores can remain inside for 2-3 weeks and then be planted out in the garden. You can't do that with a poinsettia. Not only is the hellebore a beautiful and unique alternative to a poinsettia but you don't have to throw it out. It will grace your garden for years to come. That's a lot more environmentally friendly!

Two friends with their Christmas Rose Centrepieces. The green cymbidium orchids are place holders for Christmas rose flowers when they come into bloom.

This year we added a new workshop at the Christmas Hurrah!: the Christmas Rose Centrepiece Workshop. Diane Levings of Full Bloom Flowers on Commercial Drive (beside Uprising Bread) was our wonderful instructor as was her assistant Joan. With Diane's years of experience in the florist industry combined with her calm and helpful nature she led our attendees in the design of their very own florist-quality centrepieces to grace their table for Christmas parties and Christmas dinner.

Attendees had the choice of one or two red taper candles and then used seasonal greens, twigs, berries and pinecones to build the centrepiece. Last but not least came the Christmas rose flowers. Because the Christmas roses are in bud or just opening we used green orchids as placeholders.

Our Christmas Rose Outdoor Container Workshop was a hit with a record attendance of 22 people. It was lead by our talented Phoenix Perennials container expert Shelley. In this workshop our participants potted up outdoor containers with H. niger, other members of the Gold Collection and winter interest plants including Skimmia, Pieris, and dwarf conifers. They also adorned their containers with red and yellow dogwood twigs and conifer branches.

These containers are perfect to place on front doorsteps and patios to greet your guests as they arrive for Christmas festivities and to lift your spirits every day of the season. These containers will look great for a couple years or they can be dismantled in the spring and the individual plants planted in the garden.

Our Christmas Rose Wreath Making Workshop was another great success this year and was filled with happy, eager and talented wreathmakers. With the expert guidance of Diane Levings and her trusty assistant Joan from Full Bloom Flowers (www.fullbloomflowers.ca) on Commercial Drive our participants had a great time and came away with fantastic and creative florist quality wreaths. Many a participant could be heard through the course of the workshop proclaiming that they were going to take it again next year.

The wreaths were constructed with seasonal greens and then decorated with berries, twigs and pinecones. At the very end Diane showed them how to incorporate flowers into their wreaths. We used green orchid flowers as place holders. When the Christmas roses come into full bloom our attendees can replace the orchids with pure white hellebores.

I was really amazed by the incredible variety of different wreaths designed by our attendees. Every wreath was different and beautiful. To see more wreaths have a look at our Christmas Hurrah! Photo Album.

Everyone at the Christmas Rose Wreathmaking Workshop left with incredible creations. Our instructor, Diane Levings from Full Bloom Flowers, brings out the talent in everyone!

The Do-It-Yourself Indoor Christmas Rose Container: We held a weekend-long do-it-yourself project to doll up a hellebore to bring inside for Christmas. Our DIY station was stocked with pots, greens, twigs, ribbon, moss and other accoutrements as well as Christmas roses. People could drop in and do the project any time during the weekend.

Our attendees loved making the Indoor Containers and often did extras because they were so easy, they were so beautiful, they were so fun and they make great gifts.

One lady was planning on making only one but when she realized she could complete her Christmas shopping in one fell swoop with these unique and beautiful containers she did eight!

These two Indoor Christmas Rose Containers were made by one of our customers who then took them home to grace this table in her home.
Thank you to everyone who attended our event and for all the great feedback and nice comments you made about the weekend. We are already planning new Christmas-themed workshops for next year. Watch our e-newsletter, Facebook and Twitter next year for updates on the event, the do-it-yourself projects, and the workshops!

Merry Christmas
and see you in the New Year!
