Celebrating our 10th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

The Christmas Hurrah! starts tomorrow running from Friday December 6th to Sunday December 8th. This is your chance to pack in more garden inspiration into your 2013 while decorating your world for the festive season and maybe even getting some Christmas shopping done at the same time!

The Christmas Hurrah! is so exciting that CityTV's Breakfast Television came out to the nursery yesterday to film four segments on the Christmas rose and winter interest. Check out the Video Montage and Photo Album!

At the Christmas Hurrah! you'll be able to buy Christmas roses, other members of the Helleborus Gold Collection and other notable hellebores to brighten up your garden this winter. You can also take part in four different workshops and a DIY project all designed to help you decorate your home for the holidays. Full details and workshop descriptions are below. This is one of the most festive and fun weekends of the year at Phoenix. Already our Outdoor Container Workshop is sold out so we have added another session on Sunday afternoon. We hope to see you for some Christmas cheer.

There are three more exciting announcements in this e-newsletter.

First of all we are offering Christmas gift certificates for both in-nursery and mail order purchases at 10% off until December 31st. Here's your chance to save on gardening presents for your friends and family. You can also buy yourself a gift certificate and save on your 2014 gardening purchases!

We have TWO contests for you. The first is to win a trip for two to Canada Blooms, Canada's largest garden festival in Toronto this March. I'll be speaking there and you could be in the audience! Enter right now. We want to have a winner from Phoenix Perennials! The link is below.

The second contest is our Phoenix Perennials Garden Photo Contest. You could win one of five $50 gift certificates. Enter right away to improve your chances of winning. Details are also below.

THIRD ANNUAL
The Christmas Hurrah!

Celebrating the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and the Helleborus Gold Collection with fantastic hellebores, special holiday-themed workshops and a DIY project not to mention lots of holiday cheer!

Friday to Sunday December 6th to December 8th, 2013
10am-3pm
(Reduced winter hours.)

We've had a few questions from people who were wondering if they can just come and buy hellebores without doing a workshop. Of course! Though workshops will be going on throughout the weekend we are also there for regular sales if you want to stop in.

View Pictures from Last Year

This year we are excited to continue our tradition: The Christmas Hurrah! The inspiration for the event comes from combining a new innovation in hellebore breeding with an old tradition from northern Europe.

A New Innovation

The new innovation is the Gold Collection cultivars of the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, from the breeder Hueger of Germany that show incredible vigour and floriferousness relative to older forms. They also start blooming in November and December in our climate, much earlier than the common Christmas rose.

An Old Tradition

The old or traditional inspiration comes from northern Europe where the Christmas rose is brought inside the house in pots to grace Christmas tables and displays or given as party gifts over the holiday season just as we would a pointsettia in North America. Unlike pointsettias, the hellebores can be planted out in the garden in spring for years of enjoyment.

At our Christmas Hurrah! you'll be able to purchase blooming plants of Helleborus niger 'Jacob', 'Jonas' and 'Josef Lemper' which bloom from November or December all the way to March! We will also have other cutting edge members of the Gold Collection available for sale that begin blooming in the new year.

You'll also be able to participate in various workshops to doll up your hellebores with some festive decorations and plantings and take them home to adorn your house or garden or to give as gifts. Four workshops will give you the opportunity to doll up your home for Christmas using the Christmas rose.

Gary on Breakfast Television
Talking Christmas Roses and Winter Interest
(Video and Photo Album)

CityTV's Breakfast Television Live Eye paid a visit to Phoenix Perennials to take in some Christmas cheer.

Host Thor Diakow and Phoenix owner Gary Lewis talked winter-interest plants and Christmas roses and how to make colourful and festive indoor and outdoor containers for the festive season with examples from the workshops and project we'll be doing at this weekend's upcoming Christmas Hurrah! at the nursery. View the Photo Album of the broadcast to see what the nursery looks like at 5:30 in the morning in December -- dark and cold -- and to view some of the behind-the-scenes people and antics!

And here's the video montage from the morning's shoot.

If the video doesn't appear, click here.

Enjoy!

Other Hellebores
Blooming Jan/Feb until April
Helleborus x sahinii 'Winter Bells' - Hellebore - If you're a hellebore collector, take note. 'Winter Bells' is the successful result of the near impossible cross of the Christmas rose and H. foetidus. The result is an upright plant with a mound of leathery foliage and copious numbers of pendant, two inch wide, cupped cream flowers with pink reverses. Blooms up to seven months! Limited quantities. Deer resistant. Will bloom from November well into spring.
Helleborus x sternii 'Silver Dollar' - Hellebore - A lovely compact hellebore with serrated, silver leaves held on pink stems. In early spring these are topped with loose clusters of flowers that are mauve-pink on the backs and creamy green inside. As with all stemmed hellebores plant in more sun than the hybridus types. Deer resistant.
Helleborus lividus Pink Marble - Majorcan Hellebore - Pink Marble is a strain of the uncommon H. lividus, whose wild populations are limited to the island of Majorca in the Mediterranean. Less hardy than other species, it can be grown in a protected spot with overhead protection from buildings or larger plants. The gorgeous glossy green leaves are highlighted with creamy silver veins and held by pinkish purple leaf stalks. Long purplish green stems hold bowl-shaped creamy green flowers with a mauve-pink blush. Deer resistant.
Helleborus x ericsmithii 'Winter Moonbeam' - Hellebore - This hellebore has the most spectacular foliage within the genus -- blue-green leaves boldly adorned with dramatic, criss-crossing, silver veins combined with bright red petioles where the leaflets join. The clumps sport outfacing white flowers in spring which age to pink and then near red. A cross between H. lividus and H. niger from the UK's Harveys Garden Plants. Easier to grow than either of its parents. This hybrid group can be planted in more sun than typical hellebores. Deer resistant.
Helleborus x ericsmithii 'Pirouette' - Hellebore - Pink buds open to creamy white flowers suffused with pink (front and back) that darken with age to a rich pink. Flower stems are arching and floriferous making this an interesting plant for containers. Deer resistant.
Helleborus 'Penny's Pink' - Hellebore - Pink buds open to deep pink flowers that slowly deepen to green and deep pink tones. The foliage is a bluish-green and emerges with pink-flushed veins that slowly lighten to silver-green. A pink hellebore that could give 'Pink Frost' a run for its money! Great in the garden or containers. Deer resistant. Available fall 2012.
Helleborus 'Anna's Red' - Hellebore - This breakthrough hellebore brings the bold red colour of the nodding H. x hybridus into the stemmed group of hybrids previously limited to white, green and pink. 'Anna's Red' has bold red flowers held on top of leathery, boldly-mottled foliage that emerges first flushed with pink then fading to silver and mint green. Bound to be an instant classic. Great in the garden or containers. Deer resistant.
