Details are below. Get your entries in.

We also include in this issue the first official announcement of my next botanical tour that I will be leading for the alumni UBC travel program: Wildflowers of Southwestern Australia in September 2019. Fruit Salad Tree Pre-Order
Peaches, Apricots, Nectarines, and Plums
All On One Tree!

Fruit Salad trees are grafted fruit trees in which each branch grows a different fruit. You may have heard of multi-grafted apple trees but what about a single tree that produces a full range of different stone fruits – peaches, apricots, nectarines, and plums?! That’s what we call a fruit salad tree because from one single tree you can make a whole fruit salad. Stone fruits are all closely-related members of the genus Prunus (which also includes cherries and almonds). That’s why they can all be grafted onto the same tree.

Fruit salad trees are perfect for packing as much production as possible into small space gardens. You can even grow them in large pots on decks and patios. They prefer full sun in rich, fertile, somewhat acidic soil with good drainage. Zones 5-9.

You will need to pay careful attention to where you site your fruit salad tree. Keep in mind that stone fruits grow best in a climate like the Okanagan - hot, sunny, and dry. To minimize issues and improve yield you should think about what spot in your garden is most like the Okanagan with full sun, preferably all day, and good air circulation. Also keep in mind that where you live will also improve your chances as sunshine and rainfall vary greatly in the Lower Mainland and in coastal BC. Within the Lower Mainland places like Delta, Tsawwassen, Surrey, South Surrey, Richmond, and Langley will tend to be better places to grow fruit salad trees than the North Shore, Coquitlam, and Maple Ridge. Places like Vancouver and Burnaby can be fine but you need a sunny spot. Rainshadow climates like the Gulf Islands and Victoria will also be good places to grow fruit salad trees as long as you can provide the heat.

The varieties of fruit included on each fruit salad tree are:

Peach 'Redhaven' - An all-purpose, highly productive, self-fertile, freestone peach variety with a low level of fuzz on the red-blushed skin and delicious, sweet, firm, juicy yellow flesh. 'Redhaven' is the most widely planted peach variety worldwide because of its productivity and flavour. Flowers are pink and fragrant. Resistant to bacterial leaf spot.

Nectarine 'Red Gold' - An all-purpose, highly productive, self-fertile, freestone nectarine with dark red and gold skin and sweet, tangy, and juicy yellow flesh. 'Red Gold' is one of the most widely planted nectarines because of its productivity and flavour. Flowers are pink.

Apricot 'Tilton' - A productive and tasty apricot with sweet, mid-sized, golden fruit with a dark red blush on the skin. Self-fertile. All-purpose for fresh eating, freezing, drying, and canning. A classic commercial variety with great production and fruit quality.

Plum 'Peach' - Yes it's a plum but it's cultivar name is 'Peach'. This is a large, round, self-fertile, semi-freestone, European plum with yellowish red skin and sweet, yellow flesh. Very productive and great for fresh eating, jams, and jellies.

The rootstock for the Fruit Salad trees is Mustang 'Jefchum', a semi-dwarf variety bred in Manitoba hardy to zone 2. The eventual size of your fruit salad tree can be controlled with pruning but count on about 10-15 feet on average.

The Fruit Salad Trees will be about 5 feet high in 5 gallon fibre pots and cost $84.99 + GST.

Want to give a Fruit Salad Tree as a Gift? You can use this attractive form to give to that lucky person. They can also use it to pick up their own tree. Download it here.

The Fruit Salad Trees are expected to be ready for pick-up in late April 2018. We will email everyone before that date to confirm the exact time you can start picking up.

Planting Instructions: Slice some openings in the sides and bottom of the fibre pot and tear off the rim of the fibre pot. Plant fibre pot in the ground making sure that none of the fibre pot is showing above ground. Mix Sea Soil half and half with your existing soil and use this for filling in the hole. Take the excess soil and build a circular bowl around the trunk of your tree about one foot away from the trunk. Water in. Keep in mind that stone fruit require heat to break dormancy so they sometimes may not leaf out until May.

The Great Citrus Pre-Order 2018
45 different citrus for Canadian gardeners including 6 that are hardy and 2 possibly hardy in coastal BC!

We are excited to offer our largest selection of citrus ever and likely one of the largest ever offered in Canada. Thanks for your interest in the exciting and rewarding world of citrus. Please let all of your friends know so we can keep presenting a wider and wider selection each year.

Beyond classic favourites like Meyer lemons, navel oranges, blood oranges, key limes, and Thai limes, we have been very excited in recent years to be able to offer a number of citrus hardy in zones 7 and 8 which can be grown outdoors year round in coastal BC.

Meet the Hardy Citrus:

Owari’ is a satsuma mandarin orange that is hardy outdoors in coastal BC! Plants form lush, tropical-looking, evergreen shrubs to 5-8 ft tall, bloom with white, incredibly fragrant flowers, and produce excellent crops of sweet, juicy, seedless fruit just like you buy in boxes at the supermarket but these you can pick off your very own tree at Christmas time with crops ripening from early December into February!

This is a picture of Phoenican Larry's 'Owari' satsuma in his garden in Richmond, BC taken in early December 2015. Fruit are still showing a little green but will continue to turn completely orange by Christmas.

A shot of Larry's tree in Richmond, BC taken in early December 2015 with some supplemental lighting. His tree is planted in the middle of the garden on the outside south facing wall of his greenhouse. This location will be a warmer microclimate in his garden but the plant is still exposed to the full brunt of winter cold snaps and shrugs them off.

Yuzu Ichandrin - Yuzu is prized in Japan for flavoring, juice and preserves producing abundant, easy-to-peel, 3 inch diametre fruit with tasty, lemon-lime flavour. It has also become a hot item for foodies in North America. This Citrus is super hardy to about minus 18 degrees Celsius and can be easily grown outdoors in coastal BC year round. Zone 7.

Sudachi - Sudachi is a cross of a mandarin orange and yuzu. Sudachi, like yuzu, is prized in Japan for culinary pursuits. The unique, spicy juice is used to flavour soups, sauces (including ponzu), fish dishes, ice cream, and other desserts. The fruit is golf ball sized and is usually picked green when the flavour is more pronounced but can also be harvested once fruit changes to orange-yellow. Higher in vitamin C than lemons. Perfectly hardy in coastal BC down to zone 7!

'Nagami' Kumquat - Kumquats are not well known in North America yet they are a citrus forming delicious, small, egg-shaped fruits 1-2 inches long that have a thin rind and are eaten whole, skin and all. The rind has a sweet/tart flavour and the flesh is sweet giving an overall refreshing and thirst quenching experience. The 'Nagami' kumquat is hardy to zone 8 and can be grown year round in coastal BC. It produces large crops, is very ornamental, and can be allowed to grow as an open shrub or trimmed to keep tight, even as a hedge in protected locations.

'Centennial' Variegated Kumquat - A variegated sport of the 'Nagami' kumquat. Eat the orange and green striped fruits peel and all. Hardy in coastal BC to zone 8 though, due to being variegated, it won't likely have quite the same hardiness as 'Nagami'.

'Nordmann' Seedless 'Nagami' Kumquat - Kumquats are eaten peel and all for a sweet-tart combo. Heavy producer of small, seedless oblong fruits. Hardy in coastal BC. Zone 8.

AND we are watching relatively new players that are potentially hardy in coastal BC: the mandarin 'Gold Nugget' and the orangequat 'Nippon' which is a cross between a hardy mandarin and a 'Meiwa' kumquat.

In addition to these cultivars we have a full range of classics and rare cultivars for your citric pleasure.
