Mid February 2014

Celebrating our 11th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

Is this back and forth weather putting you in the spring gardening mood or are you still hiding inside? Some of you were hiding last weekend during our Hellebore Hurrah! I don't blame you. The weather was at times beautiful and at times downright bitter. For that reason we are extending our Hellebore Hurrah! Opening Weekend into the Hellebore Hurrah! Fortnight. We have lots of beautiful hellebores available. Not all were in bloom last weekend so there are some real treasures opening up now that were passed by last weekend. We will also maintain all of our beautiful displays. Come down this weekend or next to take in the spring inspiration. Have a look at the Hellebore Catalogue so you can plan your some of your purchases in advance.

BrazelBerries are back for 2014 with a brand new cultivar callled 'Blueberry Glaze'. It has dark blue-black fruit that taste like wild blueberries. It's dwarf, compact habit allows it to be grown in containers, in the garden or as an edible hedge. Now there's an idea! We are pre-selling 'Blueberry Glaze' as well as the other members of the BrazelBerry clan so we make sure to get the right numbers for you. Details are below!

It's time to VOTE in our Phoenix Perennials Garden Photo Contest. You get to choose the 5 winners of one of five $50 gift certificates! There are over 180 photos to consider from your fellow gardeners. View the album on Facebook and vote for your favourites. Anyone can view the album but you must be logged in to Facebook in order to vote..

Our Canadian Mail Order site is now updated with our early spring offerings of hellebores and rare bareroot bulbs and rhizomes. If you can't visit us, we will ship to you. If you're local, please tell all your friends and family across Canada about our mail order.

Our call for applications for our Charity Shopping Weekends is now open. If you are involved with a charity and want to participate in this fundraising opportunity see the info below and to download an application form. We are also looking for volunteers to join our Hours for Flowers Volunteer Program. Details below.

I've been getting around in the media lately. You'll find videos below from my recent spots on CityTV and CTV. And I'll be on the radio this weekend talking about Plants for an Olympic Garden. Details at right.

Last but not least details are now up about this year's Cistus Nursery Group Import. Have fun ordering!.

See you soon at the nursery! You know that you want/need more hellebores. And if you don't have any yet then get down here! No garden is complete without them!

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Do you have some spare time and want to gain more experience with plants and plant care? A nursery like ours can always use some extra help!

Our Hours for Flowers Volunteer Program is for interested gardeners who want to set up a regular schedule with us to come to the nursery and help us with plant care, propagation, weeding, watering and other nursery tasks. You can do any number of hours you like on any day. We just ask that you make it a regular schedule. In addition to our gratitude we will also give you plants!

Contact Patricia by phone (604-270-4133) or email (info at phoenixperennials.com) for more information and to start volunteering!

If you've volunteered with us in the past and would like to continue, please also be in touch. It's spring and the plants are ready to go!

BrazelBerry Pre-Order 2014

NEW! Vaccinium 'Blueberry Glaze' -- Blueberry
'Blueberry Glaze' is the newest BrazelBerry and is unlike any other blueberry variety. With its small stature and incredibly glossy, dark green leaves, 'Blueberry Glaze' is reminiscent of a boxwood and can easily be sheared into an edible hedge. The white and pink spring flowers beautifully contrast the deep foliage colour. Small, dark (almost black) berries present in little bundles mid-summer. The small berries have intense flavour much like wild blueberries. With their deep colour, these berries pack a healthful punch with their antioxidant-rich qualities.

Add this ornamental beauty to your landscape as an accent planting or pruned into a hedge. 'Blueberry Glaze' is also perfect on the patio in decorative containers.
1.5g pot. $21.99 + GST

You can also order three other BrazelBerries:

Blueberry 'Peach Sorbet'
Blueberry
'Jelly Bean'
Raspberry 'Raspberry Shortcake'

Charity Shopping Weekends 2014
Call for Applications

We are currently accepting applications for our Charity Shopping Weekends program.

Charity Shopping Weekends are a way for Phoenix Perennials to give back to the community while helping to introduce gardeners to our nursery. During the Saturday and Sunday of a Charity Shopping Weekend 25% of each purchase made by a customer who tells us they are there for that charity's Weekend will be donated to the charity. This year rather than hold one Weekend a month we will concentrate all of our Weekends into the peak April-June season to help maximize the fundraising opportunties for our charities. Since 2004 we have raised $14,000 for local charities.

The charity that can benefit most from a Charity Shopping Weekend is one with a base of supporters that can be easily (and cheaply) contacted and mobilized. If you are involved with or know of a charity that is looking for fundraising opportunities, please forward this information to them. The deadline for applications is March 1st.
