Celebrating our 11th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

As I was evaluating our crops of hellebores a couple weeks ago and thinking about changing the dates of the Hellebore Hurrah! to better coincide with an early peak bloom, a little voice in my head said that if I changed the date Murphy's Law would result in some crazy cold weather that would try to slow the hellebores down! I changed the date and voila! We got our own polar vortex! (Yes. This is a polar vortex. I heard it on CBC.

But do not fear, fellow gardeners! The hellebores are fine and, owing to the sunny days, are opening up beautifully in our greenhouses just in time for the Hellebore Hurrah!. In fact, this is going to be one of the best ever with the largest selection we have ever offered: 107 different species, strains and cultivars! Please tell all your friends, family, neighbours, coworkers and strangers about town! We need your help to get the word out about the Hellebore Hurrah! -- what many of our customers call "the official start of spring in Vancouver".

And with that it's time to start studying with our Hellebore Catalogue. The catalogue includes articles about hellebores and descriptions and photos of all the varieties we'll have on offer. You can print it off and start taking notes! Enjoy. And if you don't know much about hellebores yet you won't want to miss our free hellebore workshops on Friday and Saturday at noon. Details below..

If you can't wait for the Hurrah!, we have two special pre-sale offers of hellebores available. Helleborus 'Anna's Red' will make a perfect Valentine's Day present to your loved one or to yourself or to your garden. This is an amazing new hellebore. Our Winter Jewels Pre-Sale is a special opportunity to fill your garden with colour and save money at the same time with three different hellebore collections. Supplies are limited so please order early.

BrazelBerries are back for 2014 with a brand new cultivar callled 'Blueberry Glaze'. It has dark blue-black fruit that taste like wild blueberries. It's dwarf, compact habit allows it to be grown in containers, in the garden or as an edible hedge. Now there's an idea! We are pre-selling 'Blueberry Glaze' as well as the other members of the BrazelBerry clan so we make sure to get the right numbers for you. Details are below!

Our Phoenix Perennials Garden Photo Contest is in full swing with nearly 130 beautiful photos entered by gardeners just like you. You can view the album on Facebook and vote for your favourites. The five top photographers will win a $50 gift certificate. We are still accepting submissions of photos until Feb 16th! Send them in. Details are below.

Our Canadian Mail Order site is now updated with our early spring offerings of hellebores and rare bareroot bulbs and rhizomes. If you can't visit us, we will ship to you. If you're local, please tell all your friends and family across Canada about our mail order.

Our call for applications for our Charity Shopping Weekends is now open. If you are involved with a charity and want to participate in this fundraising opportunity see the info below and to download an application form.

And last but not least: get inspired with succulents and take a look at my article on creative succulent container design that appeared recently in Gardens West/Central/East.

See you Valentine's Day weekend at the nursery!

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

The Most Passionate Hellebore for Valentine's Day: 'Anna's Red' Pre-Sale

Add passion to your garden for Valentine's Day! 'Anna's Red' is the best red hellebore in the world. This breakthrough cultivar brings the bold red colour only rarely achieved by the Lenten roses to the stemmed group of hybrids previously limited to white, green & pink.

These rich, velvety red flowers are stunning in the winter garden centred with their bright yellow stamens. The flowers positively glow when the sun shines through them. The flowers have a mostly upright and outward-facing habit sometimes with a slight nod and sit atop superlative foliage. As if the richness of colour of the flowers isn't enough, the leathery, boldly-mottled foliage emerges flushed with red variegation that later turns to silvery mint green! Yes. This is a red flowered and (in spring) red foliaged hellebore!

'Anna's Red' is a unique and superlative new hellebore cultivar that is bound to be a classic.

Whether 'Anna's Red' ends up as a Valentine's Day present for your loved one or for yourself your late winter and early spring garden will never be the same!

Our 'Anna's Red' hellebores are blooming plants in gallon pots for $24.99 plus tax. They include an optional cellophane wrapping with red ribbon for Valentine's Day. They can be picked up starting on Tuesday February 11th from 10am-5pm including at the Hellebore Hurrah! (Feb. 14-16) and after that any day seven days a week from 10am to 5pm.

BrazelBerry Pre-Order 2014

NEW! Vaccinium 'Blueberry Glaze' -- Blueberry
'Blueberry Glaze' is the newest BrazelBerry and is unlike any other blueberry variety. With its small stature and incredibly glossy, dark green leaves, 'Blueberry Glaze' is reminiscent of a boxwood and can easily be sheared into an edible hedge. The white and pink spring flowers beautifully contrast the deep foliage colour. Small, dark (almost black) berries present in little bundles mid-summer. The small berries have intense flavour much like wild blueberries. With their deep colour, these berries pack a healthful punch with their antioxidant-rich qualities.

Add this ornamental beauty to your landscape as an accent planting or pruned into a hedge. 'Blueberry Glaze' is also perfect on the patio in decorative containers.
1.5g pot. $21.99 + GST

You can also order three other BrazelBerries:

Blueberry 'Peach Sorbet'
Blueberry
'Jelly Bean'
Raspberry 'Raspberry Shortcake'

Charity Shopping Weekends 2014
Call for Applications

We are currently accepting applications for our Charity Shopping Weekends program.

Charity Shopping Weekends are a way for Phoenix Perennials to give back to the community while helping to introduce gardeners to our nursery. During the Saturday and Sunday of a Charity Shopping Weekend 25% of each purchase made by a customer who tells us they are there for that charity's Weekend will be donated to the charity. This year rather than hold one Weekend a month we will concentrate all of our Weekends into the peak April-June season to help maximize the fundraising opportunties for our charities. Since 2004 we have raised $14,000 for local charities.

The charity that can benefit most from a Charity Shopping Weekend is one with a base of supporters that can be easily (and cheaply) contacted and mobilized. If you are involved with or know of a charity that is looking for fundraising opportunities, please forward this information to them. The deadline for applications is March 1st.
