Phoenix Perennials Owner Selected as One of Canada's Top 10 Under 40

We are proud to share with you that Phoenix Perennials owner, Gary Lewis, has been honoured by Greenhouse Canada Magazine as one of Canada's Top 10 horticultural professionals under 40.

Here's an excerpt from the article announcing the awards:

The future is bright
by Dave Harrison

The future couldn’t look brighter for the Canadian greenhouse sector. The next generation of industry leadership is already making their mark in taking things to the next level.

From new ways of growing crops, to community involvement, to industry association work, our inaugural Top 10 Under 40 winners are themselves successful in business while helping others succeed.

The program was launched last spring, with nominations closing Aug. 29.

The awards criteria asked that nominees should:
Demonstrate a strong work ethic.
Show leadership and initiative.
Actively seek new opportunities for training and education.
Be involved in industry associations.
The calibre of nominations made the selection process most difficult. As we said in promoting the program: “Canada is full of young, skilled and knowledgeable people who are driving the greenhouse industry forward. From commercial growers and wholesalers to manufacturers, equipment suppliers and service providers, they are the best and brightest in our industry.”

As impressive as these award winners are and all that they have already accomplished, we feel they are only just getting started.

The best is yet to come.

GARY LEWIS
President/owner of Phoenix Perennials in Richmond, B.C.

The company Lewis started in 2004 has grown into one of the most talked about and innovative nurseries in the Greater Vancouver region.

The company has one of the largest selections of perennials in Canada with over 4,000 different garden plants each year.

Lewis launched a mail order service in 2012 offering hard-to-find plants to gardeners from coast to coast.

Phoenix Perennials hosts 50 different workshops, in addition to many special events. Lewis welcomes opportunities to share his passion for plants with gardeners, and has about 15 garden club and garden show speaking engagements each year.

It’s not surprising, then, that the British Columbia Landscape and Nursery Association named him its Communicator of the Year in 2013. He had also been nominated for the award in 2012.

His popular talks have become regular highlights of garden group meetings throughout B.C., Washington and Oregon, and he has recently spoken in Belgium, the Netherlands and Boston.

Phoenix Perennials was the Growing Gardeners category winner for 2012 and 2013 in the Canadian Garden Centre of the Year awards competition. The awards recognized the centre’s work in in building and enhancing interest in gardening through its workshops, special events, e-newsletter, alerts and other digital content (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube and Instagram).

Lewis has served on the board of directors of the Perennial Plant Association since 2009. In 2013, he helped organize the PPA Symposium in Vancouver to great critical and financial success.

He has had many TV and radio appearances and has written various articles in consumer magazines.

He has a book coming out with Timber Press – An Encyclopedia of Groundcovers. He handled all the writing and photography. The release date is tentatively scheduled for 2016.

Fruit Salad Tree Pre-Sale
Peaches, Apricots, Nectarines, Plums, and Almonds (All on One Tree!), Oh my!

Fruit Salad trees are grafted fruit trees in which each branch grows a different fruit. You may have heard of multi-grafted apple trees but what about a single tree that produces a full range of different stone fruits – peaches, apricots, nectarines, plums, and almonds?! That’s what we call a fruit salad tree because from one single tree you can make a whole fruit salad. Stone fruits are all closely-related members of the genus Prunus (which also includes cherries). That’s why they can all be grafted onto the same tree.

Our fruit salad trees are specially designed for west coast gardens. Most stone fruit do not grow well in our wet winter and cool summers but these varieties have been bred in west coast and northern climates and are disease resistant and productive outside of prime growing regions like the Okanagan.

Fruit salad trees are perfect for packing as much production as possible into small space gardens. You can even grow them in large pots on decks and patios. They prefer full sun in rich, fertile, somewhat acidic soil with good drainage. Zones 5-9

Pre-Order Now!

Here are the varieties of fruit included on each fruit salad tree:

‘Frost’ Peach (Prunus persica ‘Frost’)

Though most peach varieties do not grow well in the wet west coast climate, ‘Frost’ is a welcome exception. This modern cultivar was discovered in Washington State. It is resistant to the wide variety of diseases that affect other varieties, becoming more resistant with age. It blooms in March with lovely, pink, fragrant flowers, one month earlier than most. The fruit ripens successfully in our cool coastal summers in August and September. The semi-freestone fruit are tasty, sweet, mid-sized, round, and gold with a red flush. The fruit is suitable for canning, freezing, and fresh eating. ‘Frost’ is self-fertile and a heavy producer.

‘Puget Gold’ Apricot (Prunus armeniaca ‘Puget Gold’)

‘Puget Gold’ was developed at Washington State University and grows well in the wet winters and cool summers of the west coast. The pinkish white flowers are open in late winter followed four months later by large, oblong, freestone apricots with a lovely orange-yellow colour blushed with pink. They have an excellent flavour. ‘Puget Gold’ is self-fertile.

‘Hardired’ Nectarine (Prunus persica ‘Hardired’)

Bred in Canada, this sturdy and productive nectarine is disease resistant and produces good crops even in cooler climates. The freestone fruit are large and delicious with golden flesh and nearly completely red skin. They ripen in August. The fragrant spring flowers are pink. are ‘Hardired’ is self-fertile. It is great for canning or fresh eating.

‘Shiro’ Plum (Prunus salicina ‘Shiro’)

Shiro’ is one of the earliest ripening plums with consistent production year after year of large, golden-yellow fruit (sometimes blushed pink) that have a mild, sweet flavour. The fruit ripens in August. Use the fruit for fresh eating, canning, preserves, and desserts. It produces masses of fragrant, white flowers in spring. ‘Shiro’ requires a different plum to pollinate it. If you don’t have a plum in your yard bees will often bring in pollen from other trees in your neighbourhood.

‘Hall’s Hardy’ Almond (Prunus dulcis ‘Hall’s Hardy’)

A good almond for production in more northern climates, ‘Hall’s Hardy’ offers a good production of sweet, medium-sized almonds with a slight bitter taste. Harvest in early fall. Lots of showy pink flowers in spring. Self-fertile though will produce more fruit if another tree is present such as ‘Texas’.

The rootstock for the Fruit Salad trees is the new KRYMSK 1/VVA-1 which is a dwarfing rootstock that should result in trees 8 ft. (2.5 m) tall and will help the grafts produce good-sized fruit starting at a young age of just 2-3 years.

The Fruit Salad Trees are expected to be ready for pick-up starting on April 13th, 2015. We will email everyone before that date to confirm.

Volunteer at Phoenix Perennials with our Hours for Flowers Volunteer Program

Do you have some spare time and want to gain more experience with plants and plant care? A nursery like ours can always use some extra help!

Our Hours for Flowers Volunteer Program is for interested gardeners who want to set up a regular schedule with us to come to the nursery and help us with plant care, propagation, weeding, watering and other nursery tasks. You can do any number of hours you like on any day. We just ask that you make it a regular schedule. In addition to our gratitude we will also give you plants!

Contact Patricia by phone (604-270-4133) or email (info at phoenixperennials.com) for more information and to start volunteering!

If you've volunteered with us in the past and would like to continue, please also be in touch. It's spring and the plants are ready to go!

Charity Shopping Weekends 2014
Call for Applications

We are currently accepting applications for our Charity Shopping Weekends program until March 1st, 2015.

Charity Shopping Weekends are a way for Phoenix Perennials to give back to the community while helping to introduce gardeners to our nursery. During the Saturday and Sunday of a Charity Shopping Weekend 25% of each purchase made by a customer who tells us they are there for that charity's Weekend will be donated to the charity. This year rather than hold one Weekend a month we will concentrate all of our Weekends into the peak April-June season to help maximize the fundraising opportunties for our charities. Since 2004 we have raised $14,000 for local charities.

The charity that can benefit most from a Charity Shopping Weekend is one with a base of supporters that can be easily (and cheaply) contacted and mobilized. If you are involved with or know of a charity that is looking for fundraising opportunities, please forward this information to them. The deadline for applications is March 1st.
