March 2018

Celebrating our 15th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

Spring has sprung and we are open for the 2018 gardening season!

The weather on opening weekend, however, was a bit of a shock. We get all kinds of weather at the Hellebore Hurrah! Opening Week but I can't remember having a snow storm on opening day before! Lots of gardeners did come out once the weather smartened up but we still do have an extra nice selection of hellebores still available. You really should come see them. They are beautiful and inspiring. You can study before you come out with our 2018 Hellebore Catalogue which is linked below.

Another sign of spring is the launch of Phoenix Perennials Mail Order for Canadian gardeners. After we launched at the start of the week with an announcement in our Mail Order Alert, one of our regular mail order customers emailed back with a simple response: "Thank god!". We noted that she is from a particularly cold and snowy place and probably needs a little hope right now! We are very excited to have an updated mail order website with improved functionality and to be offering our most ever plants this year: 1000 in total which includes 400 new plants to mail order of which 300 are completely new to Phoenix Perennials. It's exciting times, fellow gardeners.

For your audio visual enjoyment, Gary has been making the rounds to various TV and Radio studios lately so check out his segments on CTV, CityTV, and Roundhouse Radio below.

Don't forget to share inspiration with others by sending in your photos to our Photo Contest. There are $500 in prizes up for grabs. Because we have been so busy in the office writing plant descriptions we haven't had time yet to start uploading photo contest photos. We have pushed back the deadlines by a month. See below for details.

We also have lots of pre-orders running so you can lock in some perfect plants for your garden this year:

  • The Hydrangea Hysteria Pre-Order featuring rare, unique and cutting edge cultivars
  • The Fruit Salad Tree Pre-Order with peaches, apricots, nectarines, and plums all on the same tree
  • The Great Citrus Pre-Order featuring hardy and non-harding citrus
  • The Clematis Conundrum Pre-Order featuring one of the largest selections of Clematis and Passionflowers ever seen in one place
  • The Mighty Mato, Ketchup 'n' Fries, and Grafted Veggie Pre-Order featuring the hottest edibles
  • The Earth Apples Gourmet Potatoes Pre-Order featuring 10 varieties of colourful, hard-to-find, and delicious cultivars

You'll find full details, images, and links to all of the pre-orders below.

We also include in this issue info on the next botanical tour that I will be leading for the alumni UBC travel program: Wildflowers of Southwestern Australia in September 2019. All UBC tours are open to everyone. Below you can sign up to participate in a webinar I will present on the trip in March and view the draft itinerary and tour details.

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Phoenix Perennials Mail Order 2018

A New Look and More Plants Than Ever Before!

Let us introduce you to our new mail order site for 2018. It has taken us some extra time to launch it because we have added more new plants than ever before and we've also upgraded our shopping cart system to make it easier and more beautiful to shop. Taa-daa!

Plant Selection - Here's what to look for amongst our plants:

  • Choose from 1000 different garden plants!
  • More than 400 of these are new to our Mail Order site.
  • More than 300 of these are completely new to Phoenix Perennials.
  • We've added more plants for cold climate gardeners in zones 1-4. Look for more poppies, Iris, Hydrangea, hardy kiwi, persimmon, Hosta, Phlox, Sempervivum, and other garden plants that laugh at a cold winter.
  • We've expanded our succulent selection and also include the oh so very hot Chinese money plant, Pilea peperomioides.
  • We've expanded our edible section especially with paw paws, persimmons, olives, goji berries, and kiwis plus a few other surprises.

New Mail Order Site - We've upgraded our website with various improvements:

  • The new look should make shopping more beautiful and enjoyable with larger pictures and better functionality.
  • We've added a section to highlight New Plants.
  • We've added another section called Super Hardy Plants (Zones 1-4) to help our cold climate gardeners identify and choose great plants for their hardiness zone.
  • Our site is now fully mobile responsive so it should look good and perform well on smart phones and tablets. You can now shop for plants while standing in line at the grocery store or waiting for your dentist appointment!
  • Please let us know if you find any bugs or weird things that happen when you're on the site. It's new and we don't expect that everything will be perfect yet.

GET SHOPPING!
Are you local? If you're a local customer, we don't accept orders for pick-up but feel free to peruse our mail order site and email us a list of the plants you would like. We'll put you on the Wish List and let you know when they're ready.

Have fun!

Please tell everyone you know across Canada about
Phoenix Perennials Mail Order! We need your help to get the word out.

Fruit Salad Tree Pre-Order
Peaches, Apricots, Nectarines, and Plums
All On One Tree!

Fruit Salad trees are grafted fruit trees in which each branch grows a different fruit. You may have heard of multi-grafted apple trees but what about a single tree that produces a full range of different stone fruits – peaches, apricots, nectarines, and plums?! That’s what we call a fruit salad tree because from one single tree you can make a whole fruit salad. Stone fruits are all closely-related members of the genus Prunus (which also includes cherries and almonds). That’s why they can all be grafted onto the same tree.

The Great Citrus Pre-Order 2018
45 different citrus for Canadian gardeners including 6 that are hardy and 2 possibly hardy in coastal BC!

We are excited to offer our largest selection of citrus ever and likely one of the largest ever offered in Canada. Thanks for your interest in the exciting and rewarding world of citrus. Please let all of your friends know so we can keep presenting a wider and wider selection each year.

Beyond classic favourites like Meyer lemons, navel oranges, blood oranges, key limes, and Thai limes, we have been very excited in recent years to be able to offer a number of citrus hardy in zones 7 and 8 which can be grown outdoors year round in coastal BC.

Meet the Hardy Citrus:

Owari’ is a satsuma mandarin orange that is hardy outdoors in coastal BC! Plants form lush, tropical-looking, evergreen shrubs to 5-8 ft tall, bloom with white, incredibly fragrant flowers, and produce excellent crops of sweet, juicy, seedless fruit just like you buy in boxes at the supermarket but these you can pick off your very own tree at Christmas time with crops ripening from early December into February!

This is a picture of Phoenican Larry's 'Owari' satsuma in his garden in Richmond, BC taken in early December 2015. Fruit are still showing a little green but will continue to turn completely orange by Christmas.

A shot of Larry's tree in Richmond, BC taken in early December 2015 with some supplemental lighting. His tree is planted in the middle of the garden on the outside south facing wall of his greenhouse. This location will be a warmer microclimate in his garden but the plant is still exposed to the full brunt of winter cold snaps and shrugs them off.

Yuzu Ichandrin - Yuzu is prized in Japan for flavoring, juice and preserves producing abundant, easy-to-peel, 3 inch diametre fruit with tasty, lemon-lime flavour. It has also become a hot item for foodies in North America. This Citrus is super hardy to about minus 18 degrees Celsius and can be easily grown outdoors in coastal BC year round. Zone 7.

Sudachi - Sudachi is a cross of a mandarin orange and yuzu. Sudachi, like yuzu, is prized in Japan for culinary pursuits. The unique, spicy juice is used to flavour soups, sauces (including ponzu), fish dishes, ice cream, and other desserts. The fruit is golf ball sized and is usually picked green when the flavour is more pronounced but can also be harvested once fruit changes to orange-yellow. Higher in vitamin C than lemons. Perfectly hardy in coastal BC down to zone 7!

'Nagami' Kumquat - Kumquats are not well known in North America yet they are a citrus forming delicious, small, egg-shaped fruits 1-2 inches long that have a thin rind and are eaten whole, skin and all. The rind has a sweet/tart flavour and the flesh is sweet giving an overall refreshing and thirst quenching experience. The 'Nagami' kumquat is hardy to zone 8 and can be grown year round in coastal BC. It produces large crops, is very ornamental, and can be allowed to grow as an open shrub or trimmed to keep tight, even as a hedge in protected locations.

'Centennial' Variegated Kumquat - A variegated sport of the 'Nagami' kumquat. Eat the orange and green striped fruits peel and all. Hardy in coastal BC to zone 8 though, due to being variegated, it won't likely have quite the same hardiness as 'Nagami'.

'Nordmann' Seedless 'Nagami' Kumquat - Kumquats are eaten peel and all for a sweet-tart combo. Heavy producer of small, seedless oblong fruits. Hardy in coastal BC. Zone 8.

AND we are watching relatively new players that are potentially hardy in coastal BC: the mandarin 'Gold Nugget' and the orangequat 'Nippon' which is a cross between a hardy mandarin and a 'Meiwa' kumquat.

In addition to these cultivars we have a full range of classics and rare cultivars for your citric pleasure.

The Revolutionary, New "TomTato" is a hand-grafted plant that brings together tomatoes and potatoes, two close relatives, that together give us one of life's great pleasures: 'Ketchup 'n' Fries'. It produces the sweetest cherry tomatoes you've ever tasted by the hundreds. In 2016 an improved grafting method lead to much better crops of potatoes than in 2015 with a few pounds per plant.

'Ketchup 'n' Fries' Tomtato (Improved) -- Hundreds of delicious, super sweet cherry tomatoes on top and a few pounds of yummy potatoes just below the soil! This year an improved grafting process should ensure more reliable and larger crops of potatoes than in 2015. Tomatoes and potatoes are closely related. They are grafted by hand and grow happily together as the revolutionary 'Ketchup 'n' Fries'. Double your production of edibles from the same space. Great for veggie gardens, small spaces, and large containers. 1g pot, 24.99 + GST

Mighty Mato Grafted Tomatoes consist of desirable heirloom and cool modern varieties hand-grafted onto super strong tomato rootstock that confers greater disease resistance, greater cold tolerance, and greater vigour resulting in up to 2-3 times more tomatoes per plant than ungrafted plants! Heirloom tomatoes that are sometimes shy in their yields produce like never before. Cool modern varieties also produce extra large yields.

Mighty Melons and Mighty Veggies consist of desirable heirloom and cool modern varieties that are grafted onto super strong rootstock that, like the Mighty Matos, confers greater disease resistance, greater cold tolerance, and greater vigour resulting in extra large crops of fruit and vegetables. The grafting can make a particularly positive difference in our cool summer climates with melons, peppers and eggplants that all require hot seasons to produce good crops.
