The Phoenix Perennials E-Newsletter
November 2012

Hello from Phoenix Perennials!

It's November and the nursery is now closed for the winter season. We will reopen in late February 2013 with the Hellebore Hurrah!

We do have one special event between now and then to lift your spirits with some Christmas cheer. It's THE CHRISTMAS HURRAH! for one special weekend. This will be our second annual event to celebrate the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and the other members of the Gold Collection hellebores.

This new breeding brings us robust nigers that bloom from November or December until April! This is fantastic news for the winter garden.

We also love the tradition from Europe of bringing the Christmas rose into the house for holiday decoration and so we celebrate that with our Do-It-Yourself Indoor Christmas Rose Container project. You can drop in any time during the three days of the Christmas Hurrah!, set youself up at our DIY craft table and doll yourself up a great indoor container to decorate your home. It only takes 5 minutes!

The Indoor Container makes a great gift for friends and family during the holiday season. Last year we had many ladies sign up to do just one container but when they realized how beautiful they were they did one or two extras to give as gifts.

We have also just added a brand new workshop to the Christmas Hurrah! It's the Christmas Rose Centrepiece Workshop. You'll have the opportunity to do up your own gorgeous, florist-quality table centrepiece for a fraction of the cost of buying one from a flower shop. And you'll have tons of fun doing it. Bring a friend!

Along with our Christmas Rose Wreath Making Workshop and our Christmas Rose Outdoor Container Workshop this year's event is going to be fantastic. And if you don't have time to join us for a workshop you can, of course, come down to pick up some hellebores for your garden! We hope you'll join us. Please note our hours for this event are 10am to 3pm.

See you soon at the nursery.

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

SECOND ANNUAL
The Christmas Hurrah!

View More Pictures from Last Year

This year we are excited to continue our a new tradition: The Christmas Hurrah! The inspiration for the event comes from combining a new innovation in hellebore breeding with an old tradition from northern Europe.

A New Innovation

The new innovation is the Gold Collection cultivars of the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, from the breeder Hueger of Germany that show incredible vigour and floriferousness relative to older forms. They also start blooming in November and December in our climate, much earlier than the common Christmas rose.

An Old Tradition

The old or traditional inspiration comes from northern Europe where the Christmas rose is brought inside the house in pots to grace Christmas tables and displays or given as party gifts over the holiday season just as we would a pointsettia in North America. Unlike pointsettias, the hellebores can be planted out in the garden in spring for years of enjoyment.

At our Christmas Hurrah! you'll be able to purchase blooming plants of Helleborus niger 'Jacob', 'Jonas' and 'Josef Lemper' which bloom from November or December all the way to March! We will also have other cutting edge members of the Gold Collection that begin blooming in the new year. You'll be able to participate in various workshops to doll up your hellebores with some festive decorations and plantings and take them home to adorn your house or garden or to give as gifts. You'll also have the opportunity to make your own wreath or centrepiece and learn how to adorn them with Christmas rose flowers!

Workshops at the Christmas Hurrah!

Do-It-Yourself Indoor Christmas Rose Container
Friday to Sunday Nov 30th-Dec 2nd, 10am-3pm

Come any time during the weekend and set yourself up at our self-serve craft tables. Select your blooming Christmas rose reserved for you, choose a clay pot or a festive metal container and decorate it with organza, ribbon, moss and winter twigs. A trusty Phoenician will be nearby if you need help.

This quick do-it-yourself project is great for decorating your home at Christmas or for gifts to friends and family at Christmas parties and gatherings. You'll probably want to do a few of them and you'll probably want to bring a friend.

$30 + tax includes one hellebore & all the fixings. Register online. As part of your registration you can book to do more than one container and/or bring a friend.

Please note: There will be no shortage of hellebores if you decide to do more containers once you're at the Christmas Hurrah! but we do recommend booking in advance as we will reserve the best blooming specimens for your project. Choice of container type will only be available until supplies last.

The Christmas Rose
An Old Legend

By Lizzie Deas (Adapted)

When the Magi laid their rich offerings of myrrh, frankincense, and gold by the bed of the sleeping Christ Child, legend says that a shepherd maiden stood outside the door quietly weeping.

She, too, had sought the Christ Child. She, too, desired to bring him gifts. But she had nothing to offer, for she was very poor indeed. In vain she had searched the countryside over for one little flower to bring Him, but she could find neither bloom nor leaf, for the winter had been cold.

And as she stood there weeping, an angel passing saw her sorrow, and stooping he brushed aside the snow at her feet. And there sprang up on the spot a cluster of beautiful winter roses -- waxen white with pink tipped petals.

"Nor myrrh, nor frankincense, nor gold," said the angel, "is offering more meet for the Christ Child than these pure Christmas Roses.''

Joyfully the shepherd maiden gathered the flowers and made her offering to the Holy Child.
