Celebrating our 12th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

These recent sunny days make it seem like winter hasn't come yet, except I suppose early in the morning when everything is covered in frost! We hope you're enjoying this quieter time of year in your garden.

The nursery is now closed for the winter. We will reopen the last weekend of February with the Hellebore Hurrah! Opening Weekend.

Until then we still have some exciting things for you: 10% off gift certificates during the holiday season that are perfect for gifts for the gardeners in your life or perfect for you to buy now to save on your 2016 purchases. We are also starting our annual Photo Contest with $250 in prizes. See below on how to enter!

And if you can't bare the thought of not seeing us or getting a gardening fix between now and late February, why not join us for our special opening weekend Dec 4-6 at our Christmas Hurrah! celebrating the Christmas Rose. We have great workshops and DIY projects and beautiful hellebores now available on Pre-Sale for pick-up that weekend to brighten your winter garden. All the details are below.

Also in this issue we bring you another installment of Postcards from South Africa from my recent alumni UBC tour there. In this issue explore the amazing flowers of Namaqualand.

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

P.S. If you're a landscaper we are open by appointment through the winter. Send us an email at phoenixperennials at shaw.ca.

View Pictures from 2014 and 2015

This year we are excited to continue our tradition: The Christmas Hurrah! The inspiration for the event comes from combining a new innovation in hellebore breeding with an old tradition from northern Europe.

A New Innovation

The new innovation is the Gold Collection cultivars of the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, from the breeder Heuger of Germany that show incredible vigour and floriferousness relative to older forms. They also start blooming in November and December in our climate, much earlier than the common Christmas rose.

An Old Tradition

The old or traditional inspiration comes from northern Europe where the Christmas rose is brought inside the house in pots to grace Christmas tables and displays or given as party gifts over the holiday season just as we would a pointsettia in North America. Unlike pointsettias, the hellebores can be planted out in the garden in spring for years of enjoyment.

In our Christmas Hurrah! Pre-Sale you'll be able to purchase blooming plants of Helleborus niger 'Jacob', 'Jonas', 'Jesko' and 'Josef Lemper' which bloom from November or December all the way to March! We also have other cutting edge members of the Gold Collection available for pre-sale that begin blooming in the new year. While we will have extra plants available for purchase at the Hurrah!, it is best to order in advance to guarantee you get your plants. Last year we sold out of many hellebores half way through the weekend!

You'll also be able to participate in various workshops to doll up your hellebores with some festive decorations and plantings and take them home to adorn your house or garden or to give as gifts. Four workshops will give you the opportunity to doll up your home for Christmas using the Christmas rose.

Hellebore Pre-Sale for Pick-Up at the Christmas Hurrah!

Plan for Christmas: Plan now for holiday decorating indoors & out by pre-ordering your hellebores for pick-up at the Christmas Hurrah! December 4th-6th, 2015. Our plants are top quality - they are the biggest, fullest, and most packed with buds available in our region. The Christmas roses also make great gifts during the holiday season. You can purchase them à la carte or choose to doll them up with extra sparkle as part of our Do-It-Yourself Indoor Christmas Rose Container.

Plan for Winter: We're also offering other winter-blooming hellebores to keep your garden beautiful through January and February. The information below is organized by when each cultivar starts blooming*. Choose plants from each bloom period for a succession of blooms to keep your spirits bright from December through March!

Pre-Order to Secure Your Plants: While we will still have extra hellebores on hand at the Christmas Hurrah!, pre-ordering helps us get the numbers just right ensuring you get everything you desire! It also allows you to plan out your winter garden in advance! Last year many people did not pre-order and we sold out of our extra plants before everyone got what they wanted. We can't bring in a lot of extra plants that are not pre-sold since we are only open for one weekend for this event. Please pre-order to avoid disappointment. Many people will pre-order the plants they know they need to have and then pick up a few extra when they see them in person.

Postcards from South Africa 3
Springbok, Namaqualand

From August 25th to September 8th I lead an alumni UBC tour to South Africa to take in the spring bloom of the fynbos vegetation of the Cape and the desert wildflowers of Namaqualand. It was an awe-inspiring voyage through some of the greatest plant diversity on Earth. This fall I'll highlight various aspects of this trip in a series of articles and photo essays in the e-newsletter. Enjoy!

Namaqualand is a desert to semi-desert area on the western side of South Africa famous for its spring wildflower displays and its incredible biodiversity of plants. It is the most botanically biodiverse arid region in the world with 5000 plant species (all of Canada has the same number of species), four times more diverse than the North American deserts. Forty percent of all the species that occur here are endemic, occuring nowhere else in the world. Also impressively, this compliment of biodiversity includes one third of all the succulent species in the world.

The climate of Namaqualand is characterized by intense summer drought and heat and reliable rainfall during the cool winter months. Soil nutrients are low and soil types are diverse. The vegetation is characterized by lots of evergreen, often shrubby, leaf succulents, a few tall shrubs and trees including stately aloe trees, lots of bulbs, and spring annuals. More than the diversity of this region, it is the spring wildflower bloom that has made Namaqualand famous. Because of the reliable winter rainfall large areas are carpeted with wildflowers each spring.

The Third Annual
Phoenix Perennials Garden Photo Contest

Enter for your chance to win one of five $50 gift certificates!

We're looking for your most beautiful, inspiring, amusing or surprising photos of your garden or a garden you visited in the last year. The photos could be images of specific plants, of a container, a plant combination, a garden vignette or anything to do with plants or gardens. The photos will be posted on Facebook as soon as you send them in for voting by your friends, family and fellow gardeners. Whoever gets the most votes (likes, comments and shares) will win themselves one of five $50 gift certificates! It's so easy.

This photo is by Jackie H. from Victoria, one of last year's winners.

How to Enter
1. Send up to five of your best garden, plant or flower photos to phoenixperennials at shaw.ca. Please send high resolution photos. You may need to send them in multiple emails if the files are large. Please put in the subject line: "Photo Contest". Also include your full name and city (only your first name, last initial, and city will be published) and a description of your photo(s). Entries will be accepted until February 15th, 2015.
2. As soon as you send them in we'll put them up on our Phoenix Perennials Facebook page for everyone to see and vote for by clicking "Like", leaving a comment or sharing with their friends. Please note that if we receive a number of entries at a time we will queue you up and post one photographer's photos each day so it could take a few days to post your photos. We will email you once your photos have been posted.
3. Send your photos as soon as possible. The sooner you get them in, the sooner they will be online where your friends, family and fellow gardeners can start voting for them and the better the chance you have of winning a gift certificate.
4. Voting will run from when the first photos go up until March 1st, 2015. The five photos with the largest combined number of likes, comments and shares will win the five gift certificates. Note that a single person can actually vote three times for a photo by liking, commenting on and sharing that photo! Please also note though that in order to spread the fun around any one person can only win one gift certificate, even if you have more than one photo in the top five.
5. The winning photos will be specially featured in the March e-newsletter guaranteeing each winner not just fortune but also fame!

We can't wait to see your photos!
