Celebrating our 13th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

It is almost December and the holiday season is upon us. Phoenix Perennials are planning for the Christmas Hurrah! celebrating the Christmas Rose and the Gold Collection Hellebores with beautiful plants and fun, festive workshops. Full details are below. This is one of our favourite weekends of the whole year. We hope you'll join us by choosing some plants from our Christmas Rose Pre-Order or joining us for a workshop to make a wreath, a centrepiece, an outdoor or indoor container, or a "hellebore in a handbag"!

With Christmas coming soon we are now offering 10% off gift certificates. You can take advantage to save on your Christmas gift giving or do what smart gardeners do and buy one for themselves. We have many people each year who know they are going to shop in 2017 for their garden and buy themselves a gift certificate, sometimes in the hundreds of dollars, because they realize this is a great way to stretch their gardening budget. You can order an in-nursery certificate or a mail order certificate.

We are launching our annual Phoenix Perennials Garden Photo Contest with more prizes than ever! You could be one of 10 gardeners to share in $500 in prizes. Five gardeners who receive the most votes for their photo will each win a $50 gift certificate. Get your entries in ASAP since the earlier you do, the longer your photo will be up for voting. An additional five gardeners will each win a $50 gift certificate as Gary's favourite photos. Details are below. Get your entries in.

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

P.S. If you're a landscaper we are open by appointment through the winter. Send us an email at phoenixperennials at shaw.ca to set up a time.

SIXTH ANNUAL
The Christmas Hurrah!

Celebrating the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and the Helleborus Gold Collection with fantastic hellebores, special holiday-themed workshops and a DIY project not to mention lots of holiday cheer!

Friday to Sunday December 2nd to 4th, 2016
10am-3pm
(Please note these special winter hours.)

View Pictures from 2013 and 2014

This year we are excited to continue our tradition: The Christmas Hurrah! The inspiration for the event comes from combining a recent innovation in hellebore breeding with an old tradition from northern Europe.

A Recent Innovation

The recent innovation is the Gold Collection cultivars of the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, from the breeder Heuger of Germany that show incredible vigour and floriferousness relative to older forms. They also start blooming in November and December in our climate, much earlier than the common Christmas rose.

An Old Tradition

The old or traditional inspiration comes from northern Europe where the Christmas rose is brought inside the house in pots to grace Christmas tables and displays or given as party gifts over the holiday season just as we would a pointsettia in North America. Unlike pointsettias, the hellebores can be planted out in the garden in spring for years of enjoyment.

In our Christmas Hurrah! Pre-Order you'll be able to purchase blooming plants of various Gold Collection Christmas roses plus other cultivars to keep your garden blooming from January through April.

You'll also be able to participate in various workshops to doll up your hellebores with some festive decorations and plantings and take them home to adorn your house or garden or to give as gifts. Check out our fun and festive workshops. It's one of our favourite weekends of the year.

Hellebore Pre-Order
for Pick-Up at the Christmas Hurrah!

Plan for Christmas: Plan now for holiday decorating indoors & out by pre-ordering your hellebores for pick-up at the Christmas Hurrah! December 2nd-4th, 2016. Our plants are top quality - they are the biggest, fullest, and most packed with buds available in our region. The Christmas roses also make great gifts during the holiday season. You can purchase them à la carte or choose to doll them up with extra sparkle as part of our Do-It-Yourself Indoor Christmas Rose Container. And don't forget to sign up for some of our fun Christmas Rose Workshops.

Plan for Winter: We're also offering other winter-blooming hellebores to keep your garden beautiful through January and February. The information below is organized by when each cultivar starts blooming*. Choose plants from each bloom period for a succession of blooms to keep your spirits bright from December through March!

While we will still have extra hellebores on hand at the Christmas Hurrah!, pre-ordering helps us get the numbers just right ensuring you get everything you desire! We will not have a lot of extra. So choose your plants now and plan out your winter garden in advance! Last year many people did not pre-order and we sold out of our extra plants before everyone got what they wanted. We can't bring in a lot of extra plants at this time of year that are not pre-ordered. Please pre-order to avoid disappointment.

The Great Citrus Pre-Order
("Owari' Satsuma and Friends")

Grow your own citrus outside in coastal BC plus grow an even wider selection with a little winter protection.

Last year our 'Owari' Satsuma Pre-Order was a resounding success. There are now many plants settled in to BC gardens about to spend their first winter. Once they have a year or two of maturity, it will be at this time of year that proud gardeners are harvesting their own satsuma mandarin oranges at this time of year.

The ‘Owari’ satsuma is just one of a number of hardy citrus that can be grown outdoors in coastal BC. There is the Citrumelo hardy grapefruit, the 'Nagami' kumquat and, highly sought after for culinary pursuits, the Yuzu and Suchachi ichandrins which are hardy to zone 7!

We also have an offer another 31 different Citrus and 3 cold tolerant avocados if you have a place where you can keep them above freezing (zone 9 plants) and above about 5-8 degrees Celsius (zone 10 plants) in a greenhouse, sunroom, or inside the house. The plants from this pre-order will be available for pick-up in mid May.

Here is the story of the 'Owari' Satsuma:

The ‘Owari’ satsuma is hardy to about -11 degrees Celsius or zone 8a, the colder end of zone 8. It is best planted in a warm, protected location in the garden against a south-facing wall or fence. A warm, sunny east- or west-facing location might also do.

Phoenix Perennials’ resident citrus expert, Larry, has been growing the ‘Owari’ satsuma outside in his Richmond garden since before the Armageddon winter of 2008/09. His plant had only a little damage in that momentous cold snap and no damage at all in any cold snap in any year thereafter. He picks large crops from his tree every year at Christmas time. We have had a taste test of his fruit amongst the Phoenicians and they taste identical to the store-bought fruit. The following pictures you see here are of Larry’s tree taken in December 2015!

This is a picture of Larry's 'Owari' satsuma in his garden taken in early December 2015.

This is a picture of Larry's 'Owari' satsuma in his garden taken in early December 2015. Fruit are still showing a little green but will continue to turn completely orange by Christmas.

A shot of Larry's tree taken in early December 2015 with some supplemental lighting. His tree is planted in the middle of the garden on the outside south facing wall of his greenhouse. This location will be a warmer microclimate in his garden but the plant is still exposed to the full brunt of winter cold snaps and shrugs them off.

This is a picture of fruit from Larry's 'Owari' satsuma picked in early December 2015. Fruit is ripe even when the skin is still a little green.

You too can own an 'Owari' satsuma or any of its Citrus or avocado friends. Click on the link below to explore our selection.

Canadian Mail Order Customers: While some of these citrus may be added to our mail order system in 2017, this pre-order represents our complete selection for 2017. It is best to place your order here to lock in your selections. We recommend you choose amongst the 4"x9" band pots and the 1 gallon pots for shipping. We have shipped 2 and 3 gallon pots before but, owing to their weight and size they are more difficult to pack and have sometimes sustained some damage during shipping. If you would like us to ship these sizes we can do so but please be tolerant of a little damage if it happens.

When you fill in your info type "SHIP" in the field with your first name so we can identify your order. If you will be placing an order for additional plants through our mail order site in 2017, when you check out from there include a note for us to combine it with your citrus order. If you are only ordering citrus, when we email you in the spring that it is time to pick up, please email us back to tell us you would like your plants shipped. We will ship to you in mid May as soon as your order is complete. Please order a minimum of $40 total in order for us to ship. Regular shipping rates will apply at the time of shipping. These are the Canada Post rates plus an amount to cover our time and materials. We cannot estimate the costs in advance but be assured that we charge shipping on a cost recovery basis only.
