Hello from Phoenix Perennials!

The nursery is now closed for the winter season. However, we will reopen in December for a brand new special event: The Christmas Hurrah!. This event will celebrate the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and the Helleborus Gold Collection with fantastic hellebores, special holiday-themed workshops and hot apple cider. We just added details of two workshops and one do-it-yourself project that you can participate in at the nursery. Find out more about this event below and read the legend of the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and how it came to be associated with the birth of the baby Jesus.

Also, to aid you in the upcoming festive season we have Gary's Favourite Books which will help you find great Christmas presents for yourself or the gardeners in your life. You can also order the very popular Phoenix Perennials gift certificates.

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

NEW EVENT
The Christmas Hurrah!

Celebrating the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and the Helleborus Gold Collection with fantastic hellebores, special holiday-themed workshops and hot apple cider

Friday to Sunday December 2nd to 4th, 2011
10am-3pm (Please note these special winter hours.)

This year we are excited to start a new tradition: The Christmas Hurrah! The inspiration for the event comes from combining a new innovation in hellebore breeding with an old tradition from northern Europe.

A New Innovation

The new innovation is the Gold Collection cultivars of the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, from the breeder Hueger of Germany that show incredible vigour and floriferousness relative to older forms. They also start blooming in November and December in our climate, much earlier than the common Christmas rose.

An Old Tradition

The old or traditional inspiration comes from northern Europe where the Christmas rose is brought inside the house in pots to grace Christmas tables and displays or given as party gifts over the holiday season just as we would with a pointsettia in North America. Unlike pointsettias, the hellebores can be planted out in the garden in spring for years of enjoyment.

At our Christmas Hurrah! you'll be able to purchase blooming plants of Helleborus niger 'Jacob' as well as other members of the Gold Collection that will bloom a little bit later in December and beyond. You'll be able to participate in various workshops to doll up your hellebores with some festive decorations and plantings and take them home to adorn your house or garden or to give as gifts.

Workshops at the Christmas Hurrah!

Do-It-Yourself Indoor Christmas Rose Container
Friday to Sunday Dec 2-4, 10am-3pm

Come any time during the weekend and set yourself up at our self-serve craft tables. Select your blooming Christmas rose reserved for you, choose a clay pot or a festive metal container and decorate it with organza, ribbon, moss and winter twigs. A trusty Phoenician will be nearby if you need help.

This quick do-it-yourself project is great for decorating your home at Christmas or for gifts to friends and family at Christmas parties and gatherings. You'll probably want to do a few of them and you'll probably want to bring a friend.

$30 + tax includes one hellebore ($19.99) & all the fixings. Register online. As part of your registration you can book to do more than one container and/or bring a friend.

Please note: There will be no shortage of hellebores if you decide to do more containers once you're at the Christmas Hurrah! but we do recommend booking in advance as we will reserve the best blooming specimens for your project. Choice of container type will only be available until supplies last.

Christmas Rose Wreath Making Workshop

Saturday Dec 3, 10am-11:30am

Wreaths were the first way flowers and foliage were used for decoration. Diane Levings of Full Bloom Flowers will teach you about the history of wreaths and their design as you build your very own festive wreath with unique greenery and dried pods and cones. She will then show you how to use Christmas roses, Helleborus niger, and other fresh flowers in your wreath! Bring a friend to maximize your fun.

$40 + tax. Register online. (Includes all materials such as wreath frame and greenery. You may bring greenery or twigs from your own garden to use in your wreath if you like.)

Diane Levings is one of Vancouver's most creative florists. Since 1987 she has been gracing the homes, businesses, and special events of Vancouver with incredible floral art. She owns Full Bloom Flowers (www.fullbloomflowers.ca) at the north end of Commercial Drive.

Christmas Rose Outdoor Container Workshop
Saturday Dec. 3, 1:00-2:30pm

Wow your Christmas guests as soon as they arrive at your front door or enliven your patio with a fantastic outdoor winter container centred with a glistening Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and other great perennials and shrubs that offer winter interest.

Shelley will lead you in the design, planting and final decoration of your planter with winter twigs and greens.

$18 + tax. Register online. Cost includes soil and the twigs and greens. It does not include the plants you choose to pot up. Registration is through Constant Contact and PayPal, two of the most trusted names on the web.

We will be in the greenhouse but if the sun isn't shining it could be cool. Please wear appropriate clothing to keep you warm during your time at the Christmas Hurrah!.

About your Instructor: Shelley is the creative genius behind our amazing Recipes for a Fabulous Pot. Her plant combinations are second to none. In this workshop you will benefit from her keen eye and go home with your very own magical container for the holiday season!

And of course we will have hot apple cider and other surprises.

See you at the Christmas Hurrah!

The Christmas Rose
An Old Legend

By Lizzie Deas (Adapted)

When the Magi laid their rich offerings of myrrh, frankincense, and gold by the bed of the sleeping Christ Child, legend says that a shepherd maiden stood outside the door quietly weeping.

She, too, had sought the Christ Child. She, too, desired to bring him gifts. But she had nothing to offer, for she was very poor indeed. In vain she had searched the countryside over for one little flower to bring Him, but she could find neither bloom nor leaf, for the winter had been cold.

And as she stood there weeping, an angel passing saw her sorrow, and stooping he brushed aside the snow at her feet. And there sprang up on the spot a cluster of beautiful winter roses -- waxen white with pink tipped petals.

"Nor myrrh, nor frankincense, nor gold," said the angel, "is offering more meet for the Christ Child than these pure Christmas Roses.''

Joyfully the shepherd maiden gathered the flowers and made her offering to the Holy Child.
