Cast iron plant has frequently been used as a houseplant where it can be placed in dark corners where it seems impervious to the low light conditions. Yet they are also hardy on the west coast and can be planted outside in shaded conditions, especially with overhead protection from trees and shrubs. Aspidistra 'Hoshizora' is one of the hardiest and most vigorous cultivars with large leaves up to three feet hall with regular, widely-spaced spots. The name means 'Starry Sky' in Japanse.
