A species often compared with the more well-known C. flexuosa and its cultivars but with some marked differences once the similarly exquisite true blue flowers are considered. C. elata is taller, later blooming and does not go dormant in summer. It also has a fragrance similar to gardenia mixed with coconut.

Asia - China and Japan

Understories of subalpine conifer forests, shrubs, slope grasslands or slope sides; 2900-4000 metres.
