Hepatica transsilvanica 'Blue Jewel'
Common Name: Liverleaf Family: Ranunculaceae (The Buttercup Family)

Hepatica transsilvanica 'Blue Jewel'
Zoom In Photo:

Evergreen mats of basal, leathery, tri-lobed, dark green foliage hunker below delicate, starry-eyed blue flowers in early spring that, in this cultivar, are larger than the species. This little collector's item can be grown in a wide range of conditions, but does especially well in alkaline soil, which should be moist but with good drainage. Good under deciduous trees, in raised beds, in the rock garden or in containers and easier to grow than other species of Hepatica.
