Very showy spikes of light and dark pink, bicoloured flowers rise up to 24 inches. Compact, deep green foliage. Essentially a light pink version of 'Hummelo'. This species was the most important medicinal herb to the Anglo-Saxons of early medieval Great Britain. The Anglo Saxon Herbal recommends using this species to prevent bad dreams: to avoid 'frightful nocturnal goblins and terrible sights and dreams.' It was commonly grown in physic gardens and monasteries.
