The Great Rose Pre-Order 2022
For 2022 we have combined our David Austin and Select Roses pre-orders into one large pre-order that will include our full rose selection for 2022. We have also secured new growers that should ensure a more reliable supply of roses compared with 2021 and we have gained extra assurances from our old rose suppliers of a more secure supply going forward. We hope that from 2022 onwards we will not see the shortages and disappointment that we all experienced in 2021.
All that being said, roses remain in extremely high demand and will remain in tight supply for the next few years mostly due to Covid-related production issues combined with a resurgence of interest in roses. We recommend that you order right away to secure your plants. There is still the possibility of crop failures and shortages. Our roses will be allotted on a first come, first serve basis. The earlier you place your order, the more likely you will get all your roses should there be any unforeseen reductions to our volumes.
Make sure to subscribe to the Rose Alert to be the first to know when new roses are added!
How to Order: Study this page and its many offerings, write down your selections, and, when you are ready, click the “Place Your Order” link at the bottom of the page. A new window will open with the ordering page and an alphabetical list by cultivar name. Place your order using this form. You can refer back to the photos and descriptions in the other window still open on your computer. The prices are listed on the order page. Prices for regular grade shrub type roses range from $54.99-$69.99 depending on the cultivar. Our jumbo grade shrub type roses are $99.99. Our patio tree roses and tree roses are $119.99 and $129.99, respectively. Costs for some roses are higher this year due to a shortage of supply and supply chain and shipping issues. The nursery industry is not immune from the rising costs being experienced through the wider economy.
Roses will be available for pre-order through fall and winter for pick-up or shipping in March and April 2022. We will contact you with exact dates. Full ordering and shipping details are below.
David Austin English Style Roses
David Austin roses are some of the most renowned and beloved roses in the world. Since the 1950s David Austin has been working to combine the beauty and romance of old roses with the performance of modern roses. More specifically his goal has been to bring together the flower forms and fragrance of old roses with the wider colour range and repeat-flowering of modern roses.
You need only look at the photographs and to grow your first David Austin rose to understand that these English roses are unique in the rose world. They will quickly grow into magnificent shrubs and climbers that will transform your garden with their old world charm, fragrance, and performance.
Characteristics of David Austin Roses:
- Form: David Austin roses tend to grow as shapely shrubs with a bushy mounding or arching growth habit. The climbers are strong and vigorous usually with flowering down to the base.
- Flowers: A wide range of colours with unique, cupped, old fashioned, multi-petaled blooms that change in colour beautifully as they age.
- Fragrance: Renowned for their strong and diverse fragrances including old rose, tea, myrrh, fruit, and musk.
- Repeat-flowering: Cultivars will repeat flower providing a long season of interest.
- Design Potential: Highly versatile for different garden styles and uses including mixed flower beds, traditional rose borders, fragrant hedges, large pots and containers, for the cutting garden, and for large landscape plantings.
- Health: Bred for vigour and garden performance with great disease resistance. Every cultivar is trialled under rigorous conditions for eight years before being introduced to the gardening public.
David Austin Roses from Phoenix Perennials
Our David Austin roses are grafted onto Dr Huey rootstock which is widely regarded as the best option for the Canadian climate. Hardiness is rated as zone 4 or 5, depending on the cultivar. For tricks on how to grow these roses in colder zones than their official rating read our article on “How to Grow David Austin Roses in Zone 3”.

David Austin is the most famous breeder of English style roses but other top international breeders also produce roses in the English style. These roses are all magnificent.

Roses Bred by Brad Jalbert of Select Roses
We are very pleased to offer and highlight the amazing introductions and breeding work of our friend Brad Jalbert from Select Roses. His roses are bred in Langley, BC but are now grown around the world. It’s time that Brad and his roses became better known at home, especially in BC where his roses are perfectly in tune with our particular climate.
Select Roses introductions have undergone long term no-spray testing in adverse conditions. Their trial beds in Langley have heavy, wet, clay soils and receive limited sunlight with substantial disease pressures from surrounding fields and forest lands. The trial plants are over-wintered with no winter protection. Brad has carefully and ruthlessly selected only the best disease-free performers with the most beautiful flowers to introduce internationally. His roses have also been trialed in other climates around the world, particularly in eastern Canada, Europe, the US, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, where they have received rave reviews for their healthy, thick foliage, beautiful flowers, and ease of care. In recognition, Select Roses is the first Canadian rose grower to have enjoyed multiple international awards for the quality of Brad’s work.
We are very pleased to now bring these roses to you, a mix of hybrid teas, grandifloras, floribundas, shrub, and landscape roses along with a selection of other roses from top international breeders that Brad recommends enthusiastically. All of these roses will be hardy to at least zone 5. With deeper planting, hilling up of soil in winter, protection from drying winter winds, and good snow cover, they could be hardy into colder zones. They are all grown on hardy multiflora root stock right here in Canada.

Ordering, Pick-Up, and Shipping Details
A Note on Rose Colours and Performance: Rose flower colours naturally change with the age of the flower. They can also change based on the temperatures when the bud forms and opens. Generally flower colour is deepest in bud and when the flower first opens lightening as the flower ages. Temperature-wise, flowers are usually darker in cooler weather and lighter in warmer weather. We have tried to choose photos that are representative of the peak beauty of each cultivar. If the exact colours of your rose through the life of each flower are very important to you, we recommend doing a Google Image search to peruse a variety of images so you get a good idea of what to expect.
We have endeavoured to curate a collection of top performing roses with the help of our friend and international rose expert Brad Jalbert from Select Roses. In addition to unique blooms, performance, vigour and disease resistance are also top priorities. Though all these roses have good to excellent disease resistance, black spot and powdery mildew can still affect roses when conditions are right and this can vary from year to year. Growing in less than ideal conditions can also make plants more susceptible.
Local Pick-Up Customers: Pick-ups are estimated to begin in early to mid March. You will receive an email confirming the exact start of pick-ups once your roses are ready. Roses will be provided potted. We recommend planting as soon as possible for best establishment. Pre-orders are held for 4 weeks after which time your plants are returned to general inventory, a 25% restocking fee is deducted, and a credit note for the nursery is issued. No refunds are given.
Courier, Freight, and Mail Order Customers: Shipping will take place from March through April as weather conditions are safe for shipping and about to be warm enough to plant. Roses can be planted as soon as the ground is workable in early spring. All roses will be shipped bare root except if you live in Metro Vancouver or other BC municipalities where courier or freight shipping is cost effective. The ability to potted roses via courier or freight depends on your location, your order size, and freight costs. If you have a preference, please let us know in the Notes section when you place your order. We will try to follow your preference but cannot guarantee it as each order and shipping location presents its own unique challenges.
Our pre-orders are administered in a separate system from our mail order site which cannot quote exact shipping rates. We expect a shipment of 1-3 roses would cost about $30-$50 depending on how many roses you choose and how far you are from BC. Quite distant or very rural locations will cost at the upper end of the scale. Orders greater than 3 roses would cost incrementally more as weight and box sizes increase. Shipping costs increase again if more than one box is required for larger orders. Please note that we do not make money on shipping and charge only to cover our costs.
In order to streamline the shipping process for the upcoming season, all shipping and courier customers will be asked to provide full address information and a shipping deposit of $65. Once your roses have shipped, we will either refund the remainder of your deposit if the shipping is less or send you a PayPal money request if the shipping is more. You can pay with a credit card or PayPal account. We expect that in most cases we will be refunding a portion of your deposit but for larger orders we will usually need to ask you for more to cover the shipping costs.
If you would like to place a second order, our system will recognize your email address and block you from doing so. You can use a different email address or use your only email address but change the last letters so that .com or .ca would become .xxx or .xx. Have fun shopping!
Cancellations and Changes: Once roses are ordered, they are reserved for you and can’t be sold to anyone else. We view your order as a commitment you have made with us in good faith.
