Happy Canada Day
from Phoenix Perennials!
In the spirit of Canada's sesquicentennial birthday we've created two installations to celebrate this important milestone: the Canada 150 Canoe and the Canada 150 Succulent Living Wall.
The Canada 150 Canoe
We chose a canoe - and a red one at that! - because of its significance to the history of Canada and its ongoing importance in the national psyche and in outdoor recreation.
We've planted it with a red Japanese maple to symbolize the red maple leaf of our flag. Below these arching branches we've planted plants from every continent in the world to represent the multicultural nature of our country. There is also lots of red foliage and lots of red and white flowers.
Planting up in early May: Thank you to Phoenician Kate Herring for planting up the canoe!
Mid May: The canoe is growing in fast!
Mid May: At the bow of the boat there is rough water but as our Canada 150 Canoe cuts through these choppy seas there is smooth blue sailing (Sedums) after that - we may have challenges but working together in our canoe, we can overcome them.
Mid May: Just for good measure, we've added a Canada flag at the stern.
July 1: The Canada 150 Canoe is really growing in!
July 1: The Canada 150 Canoe wouldn't be complete without the bicolour sage 'Hot Lips' in shades of red and white.
July 1: White Sedum flowers bloom against the backdrop of Heuchera 'Fire Alarm'.
July 1: The succulents at the bow of the Canada 150 Canoe are looking marvelous!

The Canada 150 Succulent Living Wall
Our Canada 150 Succulent Living Wall is pretty straightforward in its significance with its "150" spelled out in colourful Echeveria.
Mid May: Here's our Canada 150 Succulent Living Wall a few weeks after it was installed. We look forward to watching it grow in through the summer.
July 1st: The Canada 150 Succulent Living Wall has really filled in over the last 6 weeks!
