Celebrating our 13th Anniversary Season!
Hello Lovers of All Things Fragrant!
In this installment we bring you hardy gardenia. These amazing versions of what was once a pot plant for the indoors now comes in a few varieties that are hardy to zone 7 or about minus 17 degrees Celsius! They have all the fragrance you expect from a Gardenia. They also have lush, evergreen foliage that remains shiny and attractive year-round.
Hardy Gardenia should be planted in protected locations in the garden such as near the house, against a wall or a fence, or near other objects, not in the wide open where they might experience more wind and inclement weather. This is for two reasons. 1. It will help their hardiness to be protected from cold winter winds and pelting rain. 2. Features in the garden that absorb warmth during the day and give it off at night help the Gardenia to set more buds in the spring.
You can also improve the overwintering of your Gardenia by collecting fallen leaves in the autumn and packing them around to the trunk of the plant to a height of about six inches and also across the surface of the soil above the root ball.
Hardy Gardenia usually come into a big bloom in late spring or early summer in the garden and then bloom intermittently through the summer into fall. The fragrance is one of the strongest you could ever include in your garden. It is sweet, tropical and intoxicating.
We currently have various sizes in stock of all the cultivars below.
Yours in fragrance,
Gary and the Phoenicians
PS. If you love fragrant white flowers, the hardy 'Owari' satsuma that is pictured at right and that is currently available via pre-order is also amazing.
