Hello Hellebore Lovers!

Opening weekend is fast approaching and you know what that means!: the Hellebore Hurrah! Yeah! It runs the last weekend of February, Fri-Sat the 24th-26th. After that we are open for the season seven days a week 10-5!

That means spring is here and that the snow is vanquished. (We hope.) Hellebores are like superheroes of the garden pushing back winter so spring can safely arrive.

For those of you already smitten with hellebores, you know what opening weekend is all about with a couple thousand luscious plants. And you know how amazing they are in your garden. For those of you still learning about hellebores, make sure you make it to the Hellebore Hurrah! They are one the best groups of perennials for the garden hands down.

Every garden should be filled with hellebores. And indeed, nearly every Canadian garden can include these amazing plants. The Helleborus niger cultivars are proving hardy into zone 3 with reported successes throughout Alberta and from northern Ontario. The Helleborus x hybridus Lenten roses, which include the Winter Thrillers, Winter Jewels, Spring Series, Honeymoon Series, Wedding Party Series, and Tutu hellebores are proving hardy into zone 4. In these colder zones hellebores will require a protected microclimate, a mulch of fallen leaves, or a good and reliable snow layer but they can be grown with not too much difficulty. Though they will bloom later than coastal BC, they will still be the first perennials in your garden to bloom likely in March or April

We have four hellebore pre-orders running right now on some of the most exciting cultivars. In many cases we have limited supplies of these plants. So ordering in advance helps you lock in your most prized plants. But also, you get the best plants. Before the Hellebore Hurrah! Gary will personally choose the biggest plants and the best flower forms for you.

We also have a workshop on Hellebore Containers to Die For running on Saturday the 25th with Kate. Learn to create amazing mixed containers that include hellebores. Details are below. Please register in advance.

We can't wait to see you at the Hellebore Hurrah!

Yours in Hellebores,
Gary and the Phoenicians
