Hot Plant Alert
from Phoenix Perennials
Itoh Peonies and Patio Peonies
Celebrating our 13th Anniversary Season!
Hello Cutting Edge Gardeners!
Garden season is early this year and we're starting off the Hot Plant Alerts with a garden classic: peonies. But with a twist. There's always a twist at Phoenix Perennials. :-)
In stock now we have the dwarf Patio Peonies and our largest range ever of Itoh Peony cultivars which are crosses between tree peonies and garden peonies. Learn more about each of these groups below.
Though we're not highlighting them in this Alert we also have a full range of colours available now in tree peonies.
All these different types of peonies present so many options in the garden that you could literally have peonies at the front, middle and back of the border! And now with the patio peonies you can easily grow garden peonies in pots! (Though if you have really big pots you can also grow Itoh and tree peonies in containers as well.)
New introductions in this classic group keep expanding the possibilities!

Patio Peonies are a brand new introduction to the world of garden peonies. These dwarf plants grow, on average, to about 2 feet tall and do well in containers on a patio or in the garden. Use them on a patio if you love peonies but don't have ground to plant them in. Or if you have a small garden, Patio Peonies will be at the perfect scale for your space and leave you room to still plant other things. Or, if you have lots of space, use the Patio Peonies at the front or in the middle of the border. There are lots of possibilities for this new series.
Patio Peonies come in a range of colours with all the cultivars named after European cities: 'Oslo', 'Rome', 'Madrid', 'Moscow', 'Kiev', 'Athens', 'Dublin'. We have the full range in stock now!
Itoh peonies, sometimes referred to as intersectional peonies, are crosses between garden peonies and tree peonies. They are herbaceous plants (non-woody) with gorgeous foliage like a tree peony that flushes red when young. They have huge flowers in unusual colours like tree peonies with shades of yellow, apricot, pink, red, and white. The flowers can be as big as your face and a mature plant, which grows to about 3 feet tall and wide, can have 30-50 blooms per plant. Itoh peonies have the hardiness of a garden peony and will grow in regions all the way down to zone 3! Now how's that for a hot plant in exotic colours that can be grown across most of Canada?
Itoh peonies were quite recently very expensive. A small division of 'Bartzella' would go for $300! Thanks to the pioneering efforts of a tissue culture lab in Quebec, we now have Itoh peonies available for a much lower price. This one lab is the only one to figure out how to produce Itoh peonies from tissue culture and now supplies them to the world so these crosses are also a Canadian story.
We are pleased to offer more than 20 different cultivars this year. Check them out below! These plants are in 15cm pots and are almost blooming size. We also have 5 gallon pots of a few cultivars that are in bud and represent a great value for the size of the plants.
Are you in love with them? We are. Wait until you see them in real life!
