Mid December 2018

Celebrating our 15th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

A few years ago I happened to be at the nursery during the day on Christmas Eve to get a few things done. I was so surprised to have a regular succession of people dropping in desperately searching for Christmas presents. I didn't get my tasks done but I did sell a bunch of plants to a number of people who were very relieved to have just finished their Christmas shopping!

At Phoenix Perennials we try to make it even easier than that. For Christmas gift giving there are a few ways to give the gift of plants. You can give a gift certificate and also receive 10% off if you purchase before Dec 31st. Or you can select a plant from one of our many pre-orders and use our special certificates to give to that lucky someone in place of the plant they will get in the spring. It's so easy and you can do it from the comfort of your own home. In your housecoat. And your favourite slippers. It's so easy.

In this issue we include an article from the BBC on the health benefits of gardening and how gardening could help you live to be 100! It's another reason you should be giving plants to everyone you know for Christmas!

We have also opened registrations for our Hellebore Containers to Die For workshop and our Hellebore Crash Course seminar at the upcoming Hellebore Hurrah! opening week running March 1st to 10th.

All the details you need are below.

If you're one of the many people still waiting for the launch of our Great Citrus Pre-Order, it is coming. We are still finalizing import details but we will have a very exciting line-up of citrus available for pre-ordering in the new year. (There will be lots of yuzus in 2019!) Thanks for your patience.

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Japanese Beetle Update

The Japanese Beetle is an invasive species from Asia that has, until recently, not been found in BC. Unfortunately it was discovered in the False Creek area of Vancouver in 2017. It has the potential to cause significant damage to gardens, to agriculture, and to the horticultural industry if it is not eradicated. It feeds on turf grass and more than 300 different species of plants including fruit trees, grape vines, roses, ornamental perennials and shrubs, and various food plants.

Here is the latest information. Please share with your gardening friends in the Lower Mainland to make sure everyone is on the look out. Japanese beetle adults can fly several kilometres and are good hitchhikers on vehicles and in plant material.
Japanese Beetle regulated area of Vancouver. There are restrictions on the movement of soil, plants, and yard trimmings out of this area.

Gardeners Live Longer!

We loved this recent article from the BBC on the health benefits of gardening. We've decided to share it in the E-News. Follow the link for the full article. Enjoy.

Gardening could be the hobby that helps you live to 100

Many of the world's centenarians share one common hobby: gardening. Could you extend your life and drop your stress by taking up the pursuit, too?

Dan Buettner has studied five places around the world where residents are famed for their longevity: Okinawa in Japan, Nicoya in Costa Rica, Icaria in Greece, and Loma Linda in California and Sardinia in Italy.

People living in these so-called “blue zones” have certain factors in common – social support networks, daily exercise habits and a plant-based diet, for starters. But they share another unexpected commonality. In each community, people are gardening well into old age – their 80s, 90s and beyond.

Could nurturing your green thumb help you live to 100?

Plants make people healthier and happier so what better gift than to give them plants for Christmas.
