Mid January 2019

Celebrating our 16th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

We hope you are enjoying this mild winter! Are your hellebores coming into bloom already? It's a bit crazy. I don't feel ready for them yet. I haven't seen such an early spring since 2010 and the Winter Olympics!

If you live elsewhere in Canada and are currently spinning in a polar vortex of cold and misery, our apologies. We feel for you! At least take consolation in the fact that our mild West Coast winter is allowing us to grow lots of nice plants ready to ship to you once you thaw out!

Whether you're basking in mild temperatures or huddling by your fireplace, may we propose turning your thoughts to your garden? We are excited to have just launched our Great Citrus Pre-Order with our largest selection ever of 52 different varieties of lemons, limes, yuzu, oranges, grapefruit, kumquats, and much more. There is nothing like the bragging rights gained from making pies or cocktails with citrus from your own citrus trees!

We also have lots of other pre-orders on the go for hellebores, rare summer bulbs, succulents, hydrangea, rhododendrons, clematis, passionflowers and grafted veggies including Mighty Matos and Ketchup 'n Fries!

We have also opened registrations for our Hellebore Containers to Die For workshop and our Hellebore Crash Course seminar at the upcoming Hellebore Hurrah! opening week running March 1st to 10th. We are working on our full 2019 workshop schedule right now and hope to launch it in February in the E-News. Stay tuned!

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Japanese Beetle Update

The Japanese Beetle is an invasive species from Asia that has, until recently, not been found in BC. Unfortunately it was discovered in the False Creek area of Vancouver in 2017. It has the potential to cause significant damage to gardens, to agriculture, and to the horticultural industry if it is not eradicated. It feeds on turf grass and more than 300 different species of plants including fruit trees, grape vines, roses, ornamental perennials and shrubs, and various food plants.

Here is the latest information. Please share with your gardening friends in the Lower Mainland to make sure everyone is on the look out. Japanese beetle adults can fly several kilometres and are good hitchhikers on vehicles and in plant material.
Japanese Beetle regulated area of Vancouver. There are restrictions on the movement of soil, plants, and yard trimmings out of this area.

The Great Citrus Pre-Order
52 Different Varieties for your Citric Pleasure!

WWe are excited to offer our largest selection of citrus ever and likely one of the largest ever offered in Canada. Thanks for your interest in the exciting and rewarding world of citrus. Please let all of your friends know so we can keep presenting a wider and wider selection each year.

Beyond classic favourites like Meyer lemons, navel oranges, blood oranges, key limes, and Thai limes, we have been very excited in recent years to be able to offer a number of citrus hardy in zones 7 and 8 which can be grown outdoors year round in coastal BC.

These hardy varieties are: the 'Owari' mandarin, yuzu, sudachi (a relative of yuzu and the citrus used in ponzu sauce), the 'Nagami' kumquat, and the 'Nordmann' seedless kumquat. The four new varieties which are potentially hardy are the 'Centennial' kumquat, the 'Gold Nugget' and 'Miho Wase' mandarins, and the 'Nippon' orangequat. It's an exciting time to be a citrus fan on the west coast. Though even if you live in colder zones across Canada, these zone 7 and 8 citrus could do better for you in your greenhouse or sun room and require less heat to keep them alive.

The Rare Summer Bulbs
Pre-Order
165 Rare and Unusual Bulbs and Rhizomes for Late Spring and Summer

We are excited to launch a selection of 165 rare and unusual late spring and summer blooming bulbs for your gardening pleasure. These bulbs are provided as bare root or potted, depending on the cultivar, and will be ready for pick-up or shipping in March to early April. Many of these bulbs will be cheaper purchased through the Rare Summer Bulbs Pre-Order than potted up later in the season.

For pick-up customers the pre-order will also allow greater ease of planting and better establishment. For mail order customers it will mean reduced shipping costs and less risk of damage in transit shipping dormant bulbs versus bulbs in growth. Orders for shipping will be sent as soon as weather conditions are warm enough to safely ship from us to you. Should it still be too cold to plant outdoors in your region when your bulbs arrive, you can plant in pots and keep in a frost free garage, shed or greenhouse or simply store the bulbs in the crisper of your fridge until you're ready to plant.
