January 2019

Celebrating our 16th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

Happy New Year from all of us at Phoenix Perennials!

We hope you had an enjoyable festive season and are beginning to think about the new year ahead. At Phoenix we have lots in store for you including hundreds of new plants, new pre-orders, new workshops, and more for 2019.

In this e-newsletter we are proud to launch our new Rare Summer Bulb Pre-Order featuring 165 rare and unusual bulbs and rhizomes for the new gardening season. We are excited to offer many species and cultivars rarely, if ever, offered elsewhere in Canada. Full details are below along with information on our eight other pre-orders.

If you're one of the many people still waiting for the launch of our Great Citrus Pre-Order, it is coming. We are still finalizing import details but we will have a very exciting line-up of citrus available for pre-ordering in the new year. (There will be lots of yuzus in 2019!) Thanks for your patience. We'll announce the launch in the Edible Alert as soon as we have it ready.

In this issue we include a new contest to win tickets to the Feb 1st lecture of award-winning British garden designer Charlotte Rowe. Full details are below including a link to buy advance tickets if you want to hedge your bets. This is going to be an excellent presentation.

We have also opened registrations for our Hellebore Containers to Die For workshop and our Hellebore Crash Course seminar at the upcoming Hellebore Hurrah! opening week running March 1st to 10th.

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Japanese Beetle Update

The Japanese Beetle is an invasive species from Asia that has, until recently, not been found in BC. Unfortunately it was discovered in the False Creek area of Vancouver in 2017. It has the potential to cause significant damage to gardens, to agriculture, and to the horticultural industry if it is not eradicated. It feeds on turf grass and more than 300 different species of plants including fruit trees, grape vines, roses, ornamental perennials and shrubs, and various food plants.

Here is the latest information. Please share with your gardening friends in the Lower Mainland to make sure everyone is on the look out. Japanese beetle adults can fly several kilometres and are good hitchhikers on vehicles and in plant material.
Japanese Beetle regulated area of Vancouver. There are restrictions on the movement of soil, plants, and yard trimmings out of this area.

Contest
Win Tickets for Two to
"The Design is in the Detail"
A lecture by Charlotte Rowe

Friday February 1st, 2019, 7-10pm
$25 per person
H.R. MacMillan Space Centre
1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver

Over the last 14 years, renowned garden designer and RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winner Charlotte Rowe has built up a portfolio of over 200 designs and over 100 finished gardens which range from tiny roof spaces of less than ten square metres to large country estates.

However, it is perhaps Charlotte’s small spaces for which she is best known and which are, in some ways, the most satisfying and at the same time challenging.

“Small spaces require huge attention to detail: accurate dimensions and design, carefully chosen colours and materials and plants which provide year round interest. If any of these elements are left out, a small garden or terrace will simply not work.” - Charlotte Rowe

Presented by the Garden Design Group and sponsored, in part, by Phoenix Perennials.

Enter the Contest: Email us at phoenixperennials at shaw.ca (yes you have to put the @ sign in there). Use the Subject "Charlotte Rowe Contest". Entries will be accepted up until Monday January 28th at 5pm.

Register for the Lecture: International speakers of this calibre frequently sell out and we wouldn't want you to miss it. We recommend that you enter the contest but also buy tickets in advance. If you win the contest and already have tickets, you will have the choice of taking the tickets or a $50 gift certificate at Phoenix Perennials. Book Tickets Now

The Rare Summer Bulbs
Pre-Order
165 Rare and Unusual Bulbs and Rhizomes for Late Spring and Summer

We are excited to launch a selection of 165 rare and unusual late spring and summer blooming bulbs for your gardening pleasure. These bulbs are provided as bare root or potted, depending on the cultivar, and will be ready for pick-up or shipping in March to early April. Many of these bulbs will be cheaper purchased through the Rare Summer Bulbs Pre-Order than potted up later in the season.

For pick-up customers the pre-order will also allow greater ease of planting and better establishment. For mail order customers it will mean reduced shipping costs and less risk of damage in transit shipping dormant bulbs versus bulbs in growth. Orders for shipping will be sent as soon as weather conditions are warm enough to safely ship from us to you. Should it still be too cold to plant outdoors in your region when your bulbs arrive, you can plant in pots and keep in a frost free garage, shed or greenhouse or simply store the bulbs in the crisper of your fridge until you're ready to plant.

Give the Gift of Plants with our 2019 Pre-Orders!

Plants make people healthier and happier so what better gift than to give them plants for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. You can select plants from our pre-orders and use our special certificates (pictured below) in place of their plant. In the spring your can either pick up the plant and give it to them or your lucky recipient can come and pick up their plant themselves. So easy. So thoughtful. So fun.
