November 2018

Celebrating our 15th Anniversary Season!

Hello Fellow Gardeners!

The nursery is now closed for the winter season. But don't fear! You have one more chance to hang out with us in 2018. Our Christmas Hurrah! event is coming up Nov 30 to Dec 2 with seasonal workshops plus Christmas roses and winter blooming hellebores which you can now pre-order for pick up at the Hurrah.

In addition to our Christmas Hurrah! hellebore pre-order we'll soon be launching a number of other pre-orders so you'll still be able to shop for plants, albeit from your computer screen. There's a sneak peek below on what you can expect.

Also for the holiday season we've launched our special offer on gift certificates. Now until Dec 31st receive 10% off when you order gift certificates as gifts or as a present to yourself.

In more serious news we also provide an update on the invasive Japanese beetle. Please familiarize yourself with this scary pest and share this information with all your friends in the Lower Mainland.

See you soon at the Christms Hurrah!

Cheers, Gary and the Phoenicians

Japanese Beetle Update

The Japanese Beetle is an invasive species from Asia that has, until recently, not been found in BC. Unfortunately it was discovered in the False Creek area of Vancouver in 2017. It has the potential to cause significant damage to gardens, to agriculture, and to the horticultural industry if it is not eradicated. It feeds on turf grass and more than 300 different species of plants including fruit trees, grape vines, roses, ornamental perennials and shrubs, and various food plants.

Here is the latest information. Please share with your gardening friends in the Lower Mainland to make sure everyone is on the look out. Japanese beetle adults can fly several kilometres and are good hitchhikers on vehicles and in plant material.
Japanese Beetle regulated area of Vancouver. There are restrictions on the movement of soil, plants, and yard trimmings out of this area.

The Christmas Hurrah!

Celebrating the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, and its winter-blooming friends with fantastic hellebores and special holiday-themed workshops!

Friday to Sunday November 30th-December 2nd, 2018
(Please note these special winter hours.)

This year we are excited to continue our tradition: The Christmas Hurrah! The inspiration for the event comes from combining a recent innovation in hellebore breeding with an old tradition from northern Europe.

In our Christmas Hurrah! Pre-Order you'll be able to purchase blooming and blooming size plants of various Gold Collection Christmas roses plus other cultivars to keep your garden blooming from January through April.

You'll also be able to participate in various workshops to doll up your hellebores with some festive decorations and plantings and take them home to adorn your house or garden or to give as gifts. Check out our fun and festive workshops. It's one of our favourite weekends of the year.

Registration includes all materials such as wreath frame and greenery plus a hellebore. You may also bring greenery or twigs from your own garden to use in your wreath.

THE CHRISTMAS HURRAH! | Christmas Rose Wreath Making Workshop | Kate | Sat Dec 1, 10am-12pm | $60 | Decorate your home for the holiday season with your very own Christmas Rose wreath! Kate will teach you how to design and build a festive, florist-quality wreath with unique greenery and dried pods and cones. She will then teach you to incorporate Christmas roses into your wreath keeping it colourful & dynamic!

Our popular wreath-making workshop is a great chance to spend quality time with friends and family while accomplishing a great project to lift your spirits through the short days of winter.

Registration includes all materials such as wreath frame and greenery. You may also bring greenery or twigs from your own garden to use in your wreath.

THE CHRISTMAS HURRAH! | Succulent Christmas Centerpieces | Kate | Sat Dec 1, 1-3pm | $60 (Includes everything.) | In this workshop we'll bring together succulents and seasonal greenery to create a modern take on the Christmas centrepiece. Hellebore Pre-Order

Plan for Christmas: Plan now for holiday decorating indoors & out by pre-ordering your hellebores for pick-up at the Christmas Hurrah! Nov 30th-Dec 2nd, 2018 from 10am-3pm. And don't forget to sign up for some of our fun Christmas Rose Workshops.

Plan for Winter: We're also offering other winter-blooming hellebores to keep your garden beautiful through January and February. The information below is organized by when each cultivar starts blooming*. Choose plants from each bloom period for a succession of blooms to keep your spirits bright from December through March!

*Bloom start times are based on experience in our region in average years. The actual start of bloom can vary from year to year depending on weather. They can also vary in different microclimates in your garden. In some cases with very new cultivars we are still figuring out their exact bloom time so we are using our best guess.
